Lewis Hamilton reviews the Blackberry storm

Product-reviews.net have gotten hold of a great little video of the BlackBerry storm - yes, there are plenty of videos featuring the device doing the rounds, but I actually really liked this one because it features none other than Lewis Hamilton talking about the device!

Now it’s nice to see a personable celebrity, and potentially someone has who has a lot of uses for the device, talking about it enthusiatically - rather than a reviewer, Lewis just plays with the device and lets people see what he uses it for - cool, very cool, I thought.

Get Nectar points when you buy a BlackBerry!

You know you are getting old when you derive pleasure from accruing reward card points with a supermarket. Fortunately, I didn’t derive any pleasure as such, but am doing from letting our UK readership that you can both accrue points, AND get some BlackBerry goodness at the same time!

Nectar (which is a consortium of retailers in the UK, who have a common reward card system) have emailed me to say that if you get any BlackBerry on a UK network, with a 24 month voice and data tariff, they will give you 2000 Nectar points (once you have registered the purchase with them).

Unfortunately it’s not 2000 pounds, but hey, it’s a good deal if you have intentions of getting a BBerry soon - and let’s face it, that could easily be the case if you are eyeing up the BB Bold, as I am ….

UK Recap: who, what, and where for the Blackberry Bold

As Dusan previously reported (here and here), the Blackberry Bold 9000 (RIMs new HSPA email uber-phone) is now for sale with Orange and Vodafone in the UK. But where else can you get it?

Well apparently, 3 is going to be carrying it in November. That only leaves T-Mobile and O2, who we’ve not really heard a peep from. Previous rumours suggested sometime in Q3 for the Operators, but right now the the respective websites only have the 8110 and 8310 listed.

Of course, another strategy you can employ is to go SIM-free - sure it will hurt your wallet in the short-term, but at least you are not going to be locked in to a longer contract that you already have. In that case, you can wander on over to Expansys, where the device is currently £619.99 (correct at time of posting).

Whichever route you decide to take, you’ll be getting a universally-acclaimed device - the screen in particular seems to have come in for endless praise - and of course, you’ll have all that Push-email goodness!

RIM’s staggered Bold launch vs. Apple’s “all at once” approach

BlackberryNews.com has recently commented on the Blackberry Bold release dates - and the keyword we are looking at here is staggered… to recap, here are the supposed dates:

July 29 - Rogers business customers

August 1 - Vodafone UK

August 4 - T-Mobile Germany

August 8 - Rogers for general availability

September 1 or later - AT&T

In September - O2 (UK)

Late September - Telstra (Australia)

No new news there I think - however, what I wanted to pick up on was the different logistical strategy that RIM are employing, compared to Apple. On the one hand we have the Cupertino giant who managed a multi-operator, multi-country, and multi-continent launch (oh yes, and mutli-lanugage!). RIM’s plan is completely different than that - stagger out the launch dates across it’s different territories.

Other obvious differences between the devices (Bold vs. iPhone3G) are the touch/non-touch elements, plus the customer segmentation (Multimedia Youth vs. Business). Of course these are not strictly clear-cut definitions, but it only serves to reinforce the very different approach of the companies, not in just the devices, but how they handle getting them in to the hands of their users.

Of course Apple suffered/are suffering with both device shortages, and the less-than-perfect MobileMe sync service - so given a few months, it will be great to see if RIM’s different approach meant a smoother launch, or one plagued by issues. We wait with baited breath………

Nokia to pass Motorola as top AAC customer

AAC Acoustic Technologies Holdings (not to be confused with the AAC that is Advanced Audio Codec) has announced that it expects Nokia to overtake Motorola as it's largest customer this year:

"Revenue from Nokia would account for more than 25 per cent of AAC's total sales this year….compared with 10 per cent last year, while revenue earned from sales to Motorola is set to decrease to about 25 per cent of total sales this year from 37 per cent last year."

At the same time it was also announced that sales to RIM, Palm, and Apple would also be sizeable -together they are expected to increase their share of AAC's total sales to a combined 15 per cent from 5 per cent last year.

AAC Acoustic Technologies develop and manufacture a complete range of Cellular Phone Receivers, Hearing Aid Receivers, Miniature Speakers, Miniature Multi-function Speakers, Headsets, Microphones and Transducers & Buzzers - and obviously pretty well, judging by the news above!!

UK: Vodafone chooses Neverfail to deliver uninterrupted service for BlackBerries!

Vodafone UK has announced a deal with Neverfail, to deliver HA (high availability) and DR (disaster receovery) service for people using BlackBerry. HA/DR solutions are extremely common with the telecoms industry, to the point where if you are selling in to an MNO (as I've done lots of times previously), then these requirements are standard.

It would appear here like Vodafone have bought a monitoring solution for the BlackBerry email servers which can also do things like automatically restart systems, or failover to a secondary server. Alerting will also be thrown in to notify staff.

All this sounds like a good thing, but obviously it does make you wonder about the reliability of the existing BlackBerry system - I'm saying nothing about that, let your fingers do the typing in to Google if more info whets your data-appetite!

Quickplay's Streaming announcements

You may remember that yesterday I made a couple of posts regarding Mobile Advertising - one of these was about Vodafone Italy and Amobee doing a deal - Amobee's part of which is powered by QuickPlay Media.

Well, a nice lady from QuickPlay's PR agency emailed me to let me know about a couple of other announcements that Quickplay have made recently - which I thought I would share with you all:
- The company recently announced FREE streaming video for Blackberry subscribers, lowering the price barrier for consumers looking to sample mobile content. It's initially available for the 8130 handset, on EVDO networks in the USA. Eligible customers can visit www.videostreamsmobile.com to download the app and start streaming straight away
- The company recently introduced what will likely be a very provocative feature - the ability to pause, start and stop long form video, and also parse the video into smaller segments for easier "internet" like viewing. The service allows for subscribers to pick up where they left off in the viewing experience whether the battery died, the service went out, or they simply had to stop watching

UK: Carphone Warehouse gets a Pink Blackberry exclusive!

RIM has released the Pink Blackberry Pearl 8110 exclusively in the UK with the Carphone Warehouse. This device has previously been in red and blue, but launching with a pink variant really shows RIM's focus at the consumer market.

It will be available free on O2 contracts of £35/month and upwards, and until the exclusivity ends on March 31st, comes with free bottle of Champagne!

Blackberry and Facebook connect…

Apologies if you have already seen this elsewhere, but I thought it worth listing (especially because I just installed the app on my BBerry!). There are a bunch of features available, as Facebook states on their site:

Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones gives you wireless access to:
- Home screen notifications so you know when you have a new Facebook event (like a new wall post or message)
- The full text of new messages or wall posts, who's poking you, new photo tags and friend requests
- Your status and the status of your friends
- All of your Facebook friends
- Photo-sharing – simply snap a picture with your BlackBerry smartphone's camera, then post it to Facebook with one click; you can even tag your friends
- The Facebook experience you're already familiar with, optimized for and integrated with your BlackBerry smartphone
You can also take a look at things from the BlackBerry perspective, here.

Personally I think it's a neat little app, giving you the kind of quick access you want when on the move. By my reckoning, that now brings the number of platforms that Facebook is available on to at least four:
- Web(site)
- Mobile (site)
- iPhone-optimised (site)
- BlackBerry (application)
