Summer is over and the CrackBerry Podcast is Open for Business once again! Apologies go out to all our regular listeners who have been jonesing for some BlackBerry talk. Rogers BlackBerry Pearl 8220 Showing Up in Flyers - Likely Not Available Until October

Rogers is taking a slightly different approach on the advertising of the new BlackBerry Pearl 8220 flip phone (formerly referred to as the KickStart). The 8220 is not even available for sale yet, yet advertising for the new Pearl is already going out in Rogers mailers. I received a bunch of emails this weekend from CrackBerry readers who have come across the advertisment above. This particular snap was taken and sent in by Mark, who was surprised to see the flyer in his local newspaper. The image should be familiar - it's the same flyer we leaked back on August 28th that confirmed the 8220's $149.99/3yr term pricing.

Just because it's in a flyer doesn't mean the Pearl 8220 is available for purchase though. Indeed, calling up your local Rogers dealer right now to ask if they have any BlackBerry flip phones in stock will probably lead to confusion (trust me, I tried). Upon deferring to my Rogers peeps who are in the know, it seems the availability date on the 8220 is still a ways off... try October 4th.

This date jives pretty well with what I've been seeing on the OS side of the equation. I've been delaying my one month 8220 review (it'll be more like a 6.5 week review when it goes up this Tuesday) because every time I go to write it a newer version of 8220's operating system becomes available and I get distracted by it for a few days and then the same thing happens again and again. When I published Part I of the Hands-On BlackBerry KickStart Review the device was still referred to as a 9100 and was running OS4.6.0.59. I've now updated the OS several times, most recently this past week to version 4.6.0.141. I'm hearing the final OS build should be completed in the next few days (once approved you're looking at a couple weeks before it's loaded onto devices and ready for sale). With CTIA starting on Wednesday it would seem a good time/place for RIM to bring official word of the new flip phone (and maybe the Storm/Thunder and Javelin too while they're at it!!), but I wouldn't be shocked to see the official 8220 announcement delayed to the following week.

Now what I want to know.... who's DYING to go out and buy a new 8220?!

Another AT&T Bold Update: Dealers to Order on the 24th?!

Our last AT&T Bold update pitted two release dates against each other, September 12th and October 2nd, with October 2nd winning the majority vote of confidence. Today the BG updated his Oct. 2nd date with further word that jives with what we've been hearing all week... that September 24th will be the initial date when dealers (not end consumers) can start ordering the device.

A few AT&T dealers this week sent us in the emails that contained the word from head office...

We have very important liquidation opportunities, please read the entire message and post for your employees. This has been sent to the stores, SM's, DM's, and GM's... AT&T is pleased to announce the launch of the new Blackberry Bold. It will be available to order on September 24, 2008.

Sweet. If dealer ordering begins on the 24th as is currently planned (I know many of you at this point won't believe it till you see it!), the AT&T Bold could likely be in your hands a day or two after... so it should be available everywhere on or hopefully a few days sooner than the rumored October 2nd release date. The wait is almost over folks!

BlackBerry Bold Arrives in Jamaica... MON!

The BlackBerry Bold is now available in C&W's markets in Jamaica! I had a feeling Jamaica might get earlier access to the Bold than a lot of other places... What tipped me off was when I noticed Usain Bolt running with one in the 100 meter final. Anyone else notice that?

I also might suggest that Jamaicans refer to the BOLD as the BOLT, in honor of the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt. Man that guy can run. RIM, a special addition BlackBerry BOLT? Anyone?... Ugh... nevermind.

The Bold will be supported by Jamaican carrier Cable and Wireless Caribbean.

Celebrity BlackBerry Sightings Roundup!

It's a week today that Sarah Palin was named as the Republican's candidate for Vice President, and I tell ya, it's made her the most "in demand" Celebrity with a BlackBerry these past seven days. I received over two dozen emails from people forwarding me articles (like this one) making mention of her BlackBerry use. The best picture I've seen to date is the one above, originally posted by CBS. I think for the most part pretty much every politician is a BlackBerry users addict.... so before election day rolls around we'll be sure to do up a Special Edition Politician Roundup (send in your pics to editorial @ crackberry.com).

Orange UK...Give Us BlackBerry Maps!

Hot in the CrackBerry forums right now is a thread posted and frequented by subscribers of Orange UK. It seems Orange UK originally advertised the Bold as coming with BlackBerry Maps, but when the device was released the FREE BlackBerry Maps was gone in favor of Orange's £5/month maps service.

Verizon BlackBerry Storm Update

The BG just posted an update on the Verizon BlackBerry Storm based on his latest intel. Here's the scoop, straight from BG's mouth:

it just went into technical acceptance at Verizon which usually takes around 3-4 weeks, and the device has been delayed internally by around 3-4 weeks while they work out the kinks (read: buggy and unresponsive) and polish it up. That puts us around a mid-November launch on Verizon. We've double confirmed that information, so it should be pretty accurate. Additionally, we heard from someone else that they've increased the marketing budget for the BlackBerry Storm just to give AT&T a little kick in the nuts for delaying the Bold so much.

So there ya have it. The fact that it's now in T.A. is a good thing. The fact that it's delayed... well.. that's something we are all starting to get a bit used to with BlackBerry stuff. Let's hope the kinks get worked out fast. I know there are a LOT of people wanting this device!
