Look what just arrived in my inbox! If you're still looking for a reason to attend the BlackBerry Developer Conference next week, the image above is it. Verizon will have the BlackBerry Storm on hand at their booth and be showing it off! I'm pretty stoked - the Storm has kept itself from my grasp thus far (booourns!!) but knowing I can touch it this coming Monday has me feeling pretttty good. Now I just have to figure out a way to fit that green coffee table of mine into a suitcase so I can bring y'all back an authentic CrackBerry.com hands-on review. Hat Tip to Doug!

If you’re in the Saratoga Springs area of New York, I would definitely check out Don McMurtry, a former vice president with Research in Motion, speaking at Skidmore College. His speech is entitled “Confessions of a CrackBerry Pusher.” The speech will go down at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in Davis Auditorium, Palamountain Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
I’m sure the speech will focus on how the BlackBerry is improving organizational structures and efficiency, but I was hoping it would start something like:
“Sometimes I build a wall around myself. To keep out the pain. The hurt.” Although it’s probably not that kind of confession.

Here it is CrackBerry Nation... the winners announcement to our impromptu OtterBox Giveaway. We were originally going to give away three cases, but the good folks at OtterBox stepped in and had this to say:
Thank you so much to everyone who submitted to the contest, we are overwhelmed with the tremendous response!!! So...instead of just three, we're picking five lucky OtterBox BlackBerry case winners! Special thanks to the awesome CrackBerry team and of course Kevin for helping us pick the winners and for hosting this incredible contest. Winners and OtterBox enthusiasts be sure to share pics, videos and testimonials of your adventures at Planet OtterBox (www.planetotterbox.com)! Happy OtterBoxing!
Thanks OtterBox! Let's get onto it. Drum roll please... and the winners of a new BlackBerry OtterBox are.....
ezyproductions, CalHiker, newkirk02, darknight_dk, and my3prez
Congrats to the winners! Picking them wasn't an easy task. There were hundreds of awesome entries (which took literally a couple hours to read)! As I read through I tried to select what I thought were the most deserving posts. Unfortunately, that didn't narrow it down by much as everybody had such good stories and reasoning as to why they deserved an OtterBox... so in the end it came down to lady luck. For those who didn't win, I have two things to say: 1. BUY AN OTTERBOX (some of you REALLY, REALLLY need them) and 2. VISIT CRACKBERRY.COM TOMORROW (trust me on this one).

Welcome back all you BBGeeks to our monthly roundup of the BBGeeks Twitter Help activities. If you have been following us for a while now you no doubt know about our account on Twitter.com.
Each and every Friday we reach out to other Twitter users and ask them what kind of problems they are experiencing with their BlackBerry devices. The response is always good. Some do not have problems at all, but just need some advice about BlackBerry software or accessories that would help them increase their productivity.
For all our readers who don’t use Twitter, we have decided to recap our conversations in which followers posed questions and we tracked down the answers.
Join us on the second Monday of each month for the official roundup. You never know what interesting information you will find.
Twitter Helpsarwild01 says:
My 8330’s GPS hasn’t worked in a week. What can I do to get it to find satellites?
It seems that arwild01 is running into a few glitches with his BlackBerry GPS functionality. One minute the GPS was working fine and the next minute nothing . . .
BBGeeks Answered:
This is a tough one to diagnose remotely. There could be any number of settings or device options that could lead to your GPS being disabled by accident. We suggested doing a hard battery pull.
(Remove your battery while the app is running - wait 30 secs then power on again).arwild01 responded back after pulling the battery like we suggested. His GPS is now reported as working fine.
CoreyHammond said:
Do you know a shortcut to clear all unread msgs? Or short cut to clear a message without clicking on it when in the inbox?
This is a simple one, but one that many BlackBery users are unaware of.
BBGeeks Answered:
Scroll to the most recent message and hit menu key > full menu > delete prior - This will delete all messages in your box prior to the selected message
Tsoniki said:
Do you know of any way to split up your email and SMS messages so they show up in separate inboxes?
We had just written a post about doing this exact thing the day before so we responded via Twitter and sent Tsoniki a link to the article on separating your BlackBerry SMS from your email.
BBGeeks Answered:
Go to Messages / Options / General Options / SMS & Email inboxes and scroll down to where it says split - that should work for you.
Tsoniki reported back that yes this did in fact work and thanked us for the link.
Do you have any insight to where I can find a good selection of OTA themes for my Curve?
Great question tw3nty3ight! and yes we do know where to get a ton of great themes and they are all FREE!
BBGeeks Answered:
For free themes for your Curve I would start here: Hundreds of FREE BlackBerry Themes
tw3nty3ight loved the link and is well on his way to pimping out his Curve with some new themes.
Is there a way to set opera mini as the default browser in 4.5?
This question is being asked more and more as the Opera Mini browser becomes popular with the BlackBerry Crowd.
BBGeeks Answered:
Unfortunately there is now way that we know of to accomplish this on the BlackBerry regardless of your OS version. That being said, the folks at Opera are working on the issue as they are aware of the desires of BlackBerry owners.
TwitterBerry is messing up! Please retweet so BBGeeks can d islandidea me. Thank you.
islandidea was not following us at the time she made this request to the Twitter universe, but we managed to stumble across her pleas for help anyways (we really do try our best to help everyone).
It turns out that islandidea’s TwitterBerry app had stopped recognizing any links within the tweets she had received. After a little bit of back and forth through DM we ultimately suggested doing a fresh install of the current version of TwitterBerry and then an upgrade to the latest release overtop of it.
islandidea reported back to us that everything “fixed” itself after leaving the device powered off for an extended period of time. This leads us to believe that a hard battery pull would have more than likely solved the issue immediately.
why can’t I turn the key tone off on my BlackBerry when I’m dialing a number?
This is a common question from the BlackBerry community and one that we have not seen a concrete answer for. We assume it has something to do with accessibility and how the phone works with the network etc.
BBGeeks Answered:
Unfortunately this can’t be done. One alternative you could utilize would be to type the number into a note and then click on the number in the note to dial silently. Admittedly this is not very practical.
dferrari tweeted back that yes in fact this was less than optimal but dialing from the note pad could in fact be handy in certain situations and was something she had never considered.
After this debacle I’m starting with a fresh 8700g. Looking for a simple, quick theme. Suggestions?
Starting over again after you have had your device wiped out really sucks, but there is an upside. Now you can break some old habits and get some updated software on your device.
BBGeeks Answered:
we suggested checking out a couple themes that we had reviewed in the past months. The first was the Today Plus theme from BlueRoom Solution. The second suggested theme was the Real Enterprise Today Edition from JC at GadgetBean which is available from our BBGeeks Store.
Why is the volume on my rings & text notifications so low even though i have it at Max volume. Do you know of any hacks for the BB 8830?
This is an issue that we were not aware of until it was brought up by chriswinfield. We did a bit of digging and came up with a suggested resource.
BBGeeks Answered:
We suggested visiting the Technical Solution Center on BlackBerry.com for instructions on how to fix this known issue.
Is there any way of taking screenshots of your BlackBerry without it being attached to a computer?
We have been looking into the various ways to take screenshots of your BlackBerry for some time now. We have people working on the site that various computer setups and have so far figured out how to take screenshots with a PC and take screenshots with a Mac. Taking screenshots internally and then sending them out is a whole different ballgame.
BBGeeks Answered:
Unfortunately there is no way that we are aware of to take screenshots of your BlackBery without it being connected to a computer of some sort.

My “radio” on my VZW Pearl seems to have been turned “OFF”. Where do I turn it on? How did it spontaneously turn off?
This happened to me too! A short while after getting my first BlackBerry I found that I had no service all of a sudden and I could not access my browser. . .
BBGeeks Answered:
The Pearl will shut it’s radio off when your power gets too low to run it. On your application screen, look for an icon that shows a small broadcasting antenna. When your radio is disabled this will read “Turn Wireless On”. When your radio is turned on, this icon reads “Turn Wireless Off”.
why didn’t my Pearl update the time when I landed in a different time zone? My other vzw phones used to.
jamesorlowski and I have had very similar issues with our BlackBerry devices =) I had this same thing happen to me when I flew into Vegas a short while ago. . .
BBGeeks Answered:
The Pearl’s time is directly tied to the device calendar. We suggested that jamesorlowski read all the way through to the comments on the following post which explains why there was no update.
We have also written a post on Changing Time Zones with your BlackBerry.

The best thing we can do in times of economic hardship is spend. Get the economy moving people! The TSX and RIM had a great day today and so should you. Buy your spouse something nice. Take that special someone out for a nice dinner. Or, better yet, buy yourself that BlackBerry Storm you’ve been craving for the past couple months. Here are the facts:
Research In Motion Ltd. (TSX:RIM), up $9.10 or 14 per cent to $73.10
TSX up 1,058.7 points or 11.7 per cent to 10,123.9
The news came shortly after President Bush announced the government would spend US$250 billion to directly buy shares in the country’s leading banks. I’m curious to see how this plays out in the long term.

Canada is casting their vote today for who will be the next Prime Minister of Canada. I will be going to vote in a couple hours and much like Jewish people will ask themselves, “which candidate is best for Israel?” I will ask myself “which candidate is best for BlackBerry?” I’ll let BlackBerry Cool readers decide who I vote for, just give me your reasons.
BlackBerry is proud to be Canadian-made. I know, I asked one recently. I want to vote for the candidate that will spread this wonderful Canadian smartphone all over the globe for everyone to enjoy. Also, I want the candidate that will improve my BlackBerry experience. Subsidies, tax breaks, trade negotiations and underhanded bribery will be the tools which my candidate will use to make the BlackBerry the most widely used smartphone on the market. Who will it be?

I thought it was interesting that ComputerWeekly, while describing “what is a BlackBerry”, chose to emphasize its ability to help the US and UK during the credit crunch.
The Blackberry has played a regular supporting role in the UK and US governments’ attempts to deal with the credit crunch. Alastair Darling used his to track coverage by the BBC’s Robert Peston while attending meetings. US representatives were told to check theirs into a bin, to ensure that details of what they were discussing would not leak out to Wall Street.
I’m not sure if that is the first thing I would say to introduce a BlackBerry. Maybe something along the lines of “the BlackBerry is a smartphone that has push email.” I don’t know, maybe that isn’t powerful enough. How about “the BlackBerry was invented by John McCain and will win the war against terror.”

Here is a video we got from CrackBerry. Although the video is a whopping 3 minutes long, it showcases all the features we’ve been looking forward to on the BlackBerry Storm. Something I’m curious about is the landscape keyboard: will it turn for everything? As Doug has mentioned before, I’m an iPhone user and one of the problems I have is that the keyboard will go landscape for Safari, but not SMS. I’ll add this to my giant list of problems with the iPhone. Anyways, this is a BlackBerry site and RIM knows its stuff, so I’m sure they’ve figured it out. Enjoy!

I can’t remember where I read this, but, Apple may actually sell more iPhones this quarter than RIM sells BlackBerrys.
Let’s think about that for a second. The BlackBerry is unquestionably the top smartphone out their right now, however, the iPhone may actually outsell the BlackBerry this quarter and Apple got to this point in less than two years. This is an impressive feat for even a company with Apple’s resources.
Knocking the price of the iPhone down to $200 was a brilliant move and had a bit of a Microsoft flavor to it if you ask me.
I don’t think that too many people that use both Macs and PCs would argue that the Mac has a superior OS, is more stable, and is easier to use than Windows, yet Windows still dominates in most homes where these very things would seem to matter most.
In the same vein, not many will argue that the BlackBerry, less web browsing, is far superior to the iPhone as far as everything messaging is concerned, simply just works all the time, and has changed how business users stay in touch and respond almost in real time to email.
I think that you could honestly say that the iPhone is to the BlackBerry what the PC was to the Mac 20 years ago in this sense. Apple isn’t going directly after corporate users just yet. They know trying to battle the BlackBerry on it’s home turf would be like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Apple is, however, going after everyone else, especially those that will become corporate users one day.
What Apple is doing is selling iPhone to consumers like mad and even though the iPhone is still little more than a novelty in most corporate IT environments, it will improve over time, especially when millions of new corporate users that already use iPhone personally are requesting it.
RIM seriously needs to look at lessons passed when setting their strategy over the next few years.

We already know that Vodafone was bringing the BlackBerry Storm to Germany and the UK, but now we have confirmation that it will be making the rounds outside of Europe as well. Vodafone Australia now has a notification site set up so folks down under can know just when the touchscreen BlackBerry will lap up on their shores. We had heard that Australia would be getting the BlackBerry 9500 from the initial announcement, but we’re still waiting on info from India. Of course Vodafone New Zealand also has their notification site up as well - gotta keep up with the Aussies, eh?

* Update: These are indeed "real" events that are being organized by various VZW regional teams. You can ignore the comments that say otherwise, though they do make for fun reading! Expect more regional events to pop up in the days ahead in your area. *
It seems the marketing team at Verizon isn't convinced the old adage Seeing is Believing does the Storm justice in and of itself, so a number of First-Look, First-Touch events are being scheduled in select markets across the USA so you can go and feel the Storm up in person :-)
Head on over to [https:] for more information and to register for any of the events. And if you live in Nebraska you can consider yourself lucky - with the first event scheduled for October 28th in Omaha you'll be among the first to see the Storm in LIVE and in Action!! The final event is scheduled for November 20th in Milwaukee. Last week we were hearing the Verizon Storm would become available the week of the 9th (that's a Sunday, so more like Monday the 10th). And if you look at how many events are scheduled for the 10th/11th/12th it kind of gives hope that there's some truth to this rumored date. So long as we don't have to wait until after the 20th!! It seems like a lot of major BlackBerry markets are missing on this list too... think NYC... LA... I wouldn't be suprirsed if we see more dates/events pop-up in the days ahead.
In other touchscreen BlackBerry news...the Storm made a BIG splash in the Wall Street Journal yesterday. You can check out the pic after the jump.
CrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. BlackBerry Storm First-Look, First-Touch Events

No solid date for the BlackBerry Storm release has been set, but an RSVP site for Verizon-hosted events could be placing the launch around late November. Last we had heard, early November was more likely, but if Verizon is getting pushed back, you gotta wonder if Vodafone is as well. This is cutting it awfully close for the holiday season, considering shipments need to get out, staff needs to be trained and customers need the time to hear about and go out to buy the device. Regardless, if you’d like to get your grubby fingertips all over the BlackBerry Storm, you can register for Verizon’s First-Look, First-Touch event, complete with eats and drinks, at locations peppered across the U.S.

Today someone posted on CnetAsia, “[Can you] use a US-bought BlackBerry Storm in Singapore?” The answer was provided by John Chan, Assistan Editor at CnetAsia, who says:
Because it has GSM and UMTS radios, yes, a US-bought Storm will work in Singapore. But, and this is a very big but, you will incur roaming charges because very likely, the phone will be locked to the Verizon network in the US and you won’t be able to simply make use of SIM cards from a Singapore operator.
Furthermore, getting the handheld will require you to sign a contract with Verizon. So there are many barriers that will prevent you from using a US-bought Storm in Singapore. It’s probably safer to wait for its official release in Asia.
I recently got back from Seoul, South Korea where my BlackBerry picked up a calling signal, but I was too afraid of turning on the data roaming for fear of getting hit with a giant bill. I’m curious, where have you taken your BlackBerry?

Location-based services are making enormous gains in the mobile space. When Android launched its developer awards, most of the apps were LBS. Now Trapster will join the BlackBerry LBS space with an app that lets you know the location of speed traps. With over 100,000 users, more than 50,000 traps, speed cameras and red-light camera alerts in the system, Trapster is well on its way to stopping traffic tickets from burdening our already worsening economy.

Last week some modest teasers and the odd ad spot were sighted, but it looks like RIM is pushing their touchscreen-packing BlackBerry Storm in full force now. The lengthy Vodafone UK video above demonstrates all the main features of the BlackBerry 9500 and gives us a pretty good feel for how the new OS will run. Some of the orientation transitions aren’t especially smooth, but on the whole the Storm runs pretty well. As for Verizon, they’ve placed a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal. This is certainly some of the more aggressive marketing we’ve seen for BlackBerry in awhile, but considering how big of a leap this is for RIM, we would expect them to put all their weight behind the launch. Keep an eye out for this one in early November.

If you are anything like me you are waiting to get your hands on a BlackBerry Storm. We have all seen great pictures and videos of RIM's first touchscreen BlackBerry and what it promises to do. Good news - the wait is over (sort of)!!! The folks over at Themes4BB have come up with an awesome Storm theme for your Curve and Pearl (All models). The theme is 100% custimizable so you can set your icons to what ever you like on your home screen. Take a better look after the jump!

We've all either complained about it, or heard someone else complaining about it. "Why can't I get my Berry to vibrate AND ring at the same time?". RIM may be deaf, but Fabian Heuwieser listened. In addition to his awesome apps like LaunchPads and SMS Display ON, along comes VibAndRing. This simple app will allow your device to both vibrate AND ring together for incoming calls (unlike the native profile which can online vibrate before ringing).
VibAndRing allows you to set the number of vibration bursts and delay time, so you can setup the vibration to your liking. Overall a great app that you shouldn't miss. It takes up very little device memory and at only $8.95, it's a must have in my opinion. And apparently a whole lot of you agree with me, as VibAndRing currently rings in at #4 on ShopCrackBerry.com's Best Sellers' list. Don't forget to check out Fabian's other applications too!

One thing I’ve started to do more and more lately is keep lists on my BlackBerry. After all, it doesn’t come stock with the MemoPad application for nothing. This is more than helpful for a forgetful person like me. It can be more than that, though. Lists can be a reminder of what I need while I’m out. For example, if I’m in the grocery store, I just pull out the ‘Berry and see what I’ve already added to the list. This way, I don’t make six trips to the store per week because I keep forgetting one thing.
So as I said, groceries is the first list I keep on the ‘Berry. Another key to keeping this list, of course, is that I have to delete things once I buy them. Forget to do that, and I risk having sixteen gallons of milk in my fridge.
Next, and most important to me, is books. I live in a city which has a store with 18 miles of books. If you don’t go in there knowing what you want, you can lose hours of your life just browsing shelf after shelf. Having the list also makes it more likely that I’ll actually read the books I buy. You should see my shelf of unread books which will likely remain that way for quite some time.
I also keep a little odds and ends list. I try to check this every time I go out, and keep my eyes open for an appropriate store or shop. This is most frequently the hardware store. So this list not only serves to tell me what I need, it serves as a reminder that I need it.
What about you guys? What kind of lists do you keep on your BlackBerry?

The other day I was riding my new expensive hybrid. I say "expensive" because you would think I would want to be extra special careful with it and it would be a priority over my BlackBerry - well I do want to take extra special care of it. I love it!
So I figured out a way to find a front pouch that sits on my handle bars and I can just put my BlackBerry in it. I thought what a great idea then I can check messages and answer calls. One big problem, a call came in and I did as planned....however, I hit the brakes with one hand while answering the BlackBerry with the other hand and almost ended up with major injuries. I don't want to be without my BlackBerry while on my bike and was wondering if you had any suggestions to do both?! Thank you,
