Rogers BlackBerry 8220 confirmed at $50

There’s been some speedy solidifcation of the BlackBerry Pearl 8220 prices that were leaked earlier this morning, with sources confirming a $49.99 promotional deal on the handset with a three-year plan, which will eventually go up to $99.99. Rogers reps will be pimping this one out with a $45 student plan which will include
- 450 Weekday Minutes
- Unlimited Evenings and Weekends starting at 6pm
- MY5 Canada-Wide (Unlimited talk, SMS, and MMS to any five numbers in Canada)
- Unlimited Local Incoming Minutes
- $5 off Value Pack for duration of contract
The plans, which need to include e-mail and a Value Pack, total to $75 and up, which, sad as it may be, is standard for Canadian students.

BlackBerry Partners Fund to announce first investments

The BlackBerry Partners Fund was announced back at WES, and humming along quietly in the background, chatting with some 1,5000 hungry, young developers who wanted some of that $150 million investment fund.

[Kevin Talbot, RBC vice president and co-manager of the BlackBerry Partners Fund] says the unexpectedly large response from developers to the fund threw operations out of gear but says it is now back on track. ‘Since the fund was announced, we have been deluged with opportunities,’ he says. ‘We have lagged a little bit behind because of that.’

Progress is being made, as they will soon be announcing the first three to four companies to get $2-$5 million infusions. A new site will be launched on August 15th. to better inform interested parties about the opportunity and how to apply. With the iPhone App Store now in full swing, Apple’s $100M iFund is looking all the juicier to mobile developers, but there’s one thing that the BlackBerry Partners Fund has that iFund doesn’t - platform agnosticism. That’s right, you don’t have to develop for BlackBerry to get in on the fund, it just has to be mobile software. RIM is staying out of the decision-making process altogether, and leaving it to RBC and JLA to handle the meat and potatoes of the operation. Of course, if you’re chosen, RIM’s throwing in BlackBerry Alliance membership, which makes working on the platform all the easier. How to install a media card in your BlackBerry

Starting with the 8800 series, the BlackBerry started transitioning to a hybrid corporate/consumer device. New to the series was media capabilities, which meant the ability to expand the device’s internal memory with a microSD card. After all, that 64 MB of internal memory isn’t going to hold a whole lot, especially if you’re loaded up with applications. A microSD card is also essential for storing e-books, and a number of other multimedia functions. In this Geek Guide, we’ll go over how to drop one into your BlackBerry.

Under the battery?
In some BlackBerry models, including the Curve, the microSD slot is under the battery, so you’ll have to remove it in order to install one. On others, like the 8800 series, the card slot sits right next to the battery, so you can continue operating as normal during this process.

The setup
Once you find your memory slot, you’ll notice that it has instructions printed right on it. Sliding it up locks it in place, and sliding it down allows you to swing it out. So, to get started, click the metal cover down into the unlocked position and swing open the door. It should look a little like this:

Placing the card in the slot
It is a common mistake for users to now place the microSD card into the phone, and shut the door on top of it. Do not do this! You could wind up breaking your memory card. Instead, you’ll place the memory card into the metal door. Do this with the gold data cells facing up and towards the bottom. By design, this mechanism will not let you place the card upside down — the door simply won’t shut.

Finishing up
Once you place the card in the door, you can close it up. Just flip the door down, and click it back up into the locked position. If you don’t lock the card in place, it will stay ajar, and that can do damage to your memory card and/or your data port.

Snap your battery back in place, if applicable, and put the battery cover back on. If you have an 8800 series model, you’ll see a brief prompt saying “media card inserted.” You might miss it, though, since it only flashes for a second. Otherwise, reboot, and you should be ready to go.

I'm not sure how you got RIM's approval for the "Sweet Life With BlackBerry" video, as I'm sure it pushes the edge of RIM's boundaries for tasteful advertising (especially in their home country), but however you did it, I approve! You successfully made me watch the promo video two three four times AND check out all the details on your BlackBerry Pearl promo.

More Rogers BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry 8220 pricing details

Some fresh screengrabs from a Rogers order form is showing the BlackBerry Bold for $899.99 and the BlackBerry 8220 (a.k.a Kickstart) for $599.99, presumably unsubsidized. The final cost is looking like $275 on a three-year plan, which would put it in the same ballpark as our previous expectations of the BlackBerry 9000 matching iPhone pricing. As for the new flip BlackBerry Pearl, they’re going to have to do some serious discounting if it’s really going to hit that $50 sweet spot. The $30 6GB plan which had been previously set up to lure in iPhone customers has also been extended to all Q3 BlackBerrys. We had been a little anxious to sign on to the sweet deal, since it was slated to finish at the end of the summer, but it makes sense to keep the plan around for the BlackBerry 9000 launch. Last we heard, the BlackBerry Bold was to be available on August 19th., but that date has been pushed back so many times that it’s hard to take the rumours seriously at this point. The BlackBerry 8220 should be landing mid-September in all its flippy goodness.

Motorola clings to number one spot in US sales, RIM still rocking

Uh oh, Moto. Go 'head with your bad self. Just days after posting a meager profit (but a profit nonetheless) and maintaining your position in third in worldwide mobile market share, along comes a report claiming that you're still numero uno in the United States. While handset sales overall shot up 5.3% here in Q2, Motorola maintained a 26% share and managed to stare down at least a few naysayers. In related news, LG held tight to the silver with 22%, while RIM gained a double-digit market share increase thanks to sales of its oh-so-hot BlackBerry handset. If that 3G action on the Bold is just a little too extreme for your EDGE mind to handle, fear not: the more pedestrian Javelin is looking hotter by the minute. Newly leaked spec documents reveal a phone that is fully modern in every single way but one -- its lack of HSDPA -- with a 512MHz core, 256MB of onboard storage, that gorgeous 480 x 360 display taken right out of the Bold's playbook, WiFi with UMA support, and a 3.2-megapixel cam. All told, it's looking ripe for T-Mobile as a replacement for the Curve in its HotSpot @Home lineup -- if RIM would hurry up and frickin' launch it, that is. RIM captures 10% slice of American market pie

Strategy Analytics (hey, we know those guys!) recently published a report saying RIM has captured a solid 10% of American cellular sales in the last quarter. A total of 41.9 million handsets were shipped, which is up 5.3 percent from last year, making it an expanding market that’s getting harder to fill. Motorola still maintains lead position, with LG, Nokia and Samsung hot on their heels. Those are a lot of competitors to chew through, but RIM’s continued upward trend could earn them an even bigger slice of the pie over time, especially if Motorola’s new boss can’t turn things around and Nokia fails to provide a solid alternative to BlackBerry Connect. LG remains the number two dog right now, and with the likes of the Keybo floating around, it’s easy to see them as a potential BlackBerry competitor.

BlackBerry Unite! Instalación: 2º intento (Parte II)

Hoy he intentado añadir un usuario a BlackBerry Unite! vía el cable USB, por ahora sin éxito. Me pide nombre de usuario, un email y su password. Y aunque el email y el password según consta en la documentación no es obligatorio, si no lo introduzco no hay manera de avanzar en la misma. Y en la segunda pantalla me dice que Unite! no ha sido capaz de integrar o comprobar mis datos de email, y se queda como colgado intentando comprobar los datos que le introduzco de servidor entrante/saliente del email. Si cancelo dicho proceso ya no soy capaz de volver a conectarme al Web Manager con la dirección [localhost:8080], para hacerlo de nuevo he de reiniciar algún servicio de BlackBerry.

He estado buscando en los foros oficiales de BlackBerry alguna solución, por ahora sin éxito. Lo que si he encontrado es que han actualizado la lista de países en los cuales está disponible BlackBerry Unite!, os dejo la lista con los link para su descarga:

He visto que en el link de España el que ponía Reasech In Motion lo han arreglado y está redirigiendo a otra url para descargar Unite!, me baje la de Telefónica, quizás ese es el problema ¿?. Voy a desinstalar Unite! bajarme la otra versión que pone Research In Motion y probaremos de nuevo agregar un usuario. Ya os contaré que tal. Si a alguien le funciona ya dirá como.

Actualización 12/08: Haciendo lista de porque no funciona:
- La más probable es que el problema sea que lo he instalado en un Windows Server 2003 ¿?
- En la actualización he cambiado el directorio por defecto de instalación, ¿puede afectar?
- Cuando estoy agregando el usuario el dispositivo no tiene cobertura, ¿ha de tener cobertura el dispositivo?
- Y otra duda ¿es dependiente del operador?¿mi operador soporta BlackBerry Unite!?

Hello, I am a faithful CrackBerry.com reader and I am always on the site. I have a CrackBerry sighting for you. My friend, David Oliver is a 110m hurdler on the US Olympic Track and Field team in Beijing. We both have Curves and he, like myself, is obsessed with them. I can't leave home without mine, but he can't even go to practice without having his Curve with him.

NICE. Not only is David Oliver a BlackBerry-using Olympian, he's a BlackBerry ADDICTED one. Now that's an athlete I can definitely cheer for. GOOD LUCK David! Bring home a Gold for CrackBerry Nation!

I LOVE the Olympics. Since the opening ceremonies hit on Friday, I haven't changed the channel on my television even once (did you see that 4 x 100 men's relay swim last night? CRAZY!!).

While watching the games is tops, if you do have to pry yourself away from the tv, don't worry, your BlackBerry has you covered. Just point your berry's browser to mobile.blackberry.com and follow the link at the top of the site (Stay close to the Games in Beijing...). This mini-portal will point you to Olympic info available from several sources: CNN, Reuters, CBC, Worldmate, or my personal favorite, Viigo.

At CrackBerry.com we have members and readers from around the globe, so we're officially fans of everyone. But you can't CHEER for everyone in every race. So it only makes sense that we cheer on all of the BlackBerry-using Olympians out there! The problem is - I don't know who they all are!!!

So PLEASE Keep your eyes peeled for BlackBerry-using athletes in Beijing and be sure to send in your news/pictures (editorial at crackberry.com) to us so we can feature it in the blogs!

CDMA users have had a fun time trying to get their hands on the latest BlackBerry software, but now they won’t have to resort to Rapidshare to get the new OS. The Canadian carrier MTS Mobility has OS 4.5 available for public download from RIM’s site. If you’re looking to try it out, just grab the file, install, make sure you have the latest Desktop Manager, and plug in your BlackBerry via miniUSB when it’s open. Don’t worry that it’s from another carrier, you should be fine after deleting the vendor.xml file on your computer. OS 4.5 features rich text e-mail viewing on supporting BlackBerry Enterprise Servers, among other goodies like a variety of attachment download capabilities and free/busy calendar lookup. Folks packing the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition might still be out of luck, although there are torrents out there for unreleased versions of the software. CDMA subscribers can head on over to RIM’s site to get upgrading their Pearls and Curves.

Verizon’s jumping on the pink BlackBerry bandwagon, now with the BlackBerry 8330 and the BlackBerry 8130 available in the new colour. Pink’s just about had its time with the BlackBerry lineup, but other colours are certainly on the way, like the recent sunset paint job on T-Mobile’s BlackBerry 8320, and a bunch of fresh colours are coming to their Pearls soon. More BlackBerry Javelin pics emerge, reveal microSD hot-swapping

Some internal docs managed to get loose recently, giving us a closer look at the upcoming BlackBerry Javelin. The specs included with the slides confirm earlier reports of Wi-Fi, GPS and a 3.2 megapixel camera, along with a screen that should match the BlackBerry Bold’s. The slides were dated in May, but the renders don’t differ much from live shots previously leaked. There are, however, some more details on how the memory card slot will work… You might have to pop the battery door, but apparently the microSD will still be hot-swappable. Maybe not as convenient as the side-loading style that’s been becoming the norm, but it still beats having to do a hard reset. Can’t wait to get one? Current rumours are pointing to a late November release.

Tons of info emerges for Javelin, Thunder

We’ll start off with the Javelin, even though most people are most enamored with the rumored Thunder. Why? Because there’s a ton of new information regarding the non-3G device…enough to make us think that the lack of 3G won’t be that big a deal. The detailed shots, which will appear after the jump, make this look like a next-gen Curve. They keyboard is in the Curve’s spitting image, certainly. You can see all the specs on the images, but for a quick rundown: 256 MB onboard memory, 512 MHz processor, 480 x 360 resolution, WiFi and GPS, and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

I’m also digging the dedicated lock button. It definitely saves those of us who sometimes forget to lock via the keyboard, and end up making a number of unwanted calls.

In Thunder news, Boy Genius Report (who else?) lets us know that the Thunder will be the BlackBerry 9530. Better yet, it’s eyeing an October 13th release. Just over two months away? Happy happy joy joy. And yes, the naming is still in question. Thunder or Storm? Or just the 9530? With two months until launch, you’d figure we’d get the official announcement in three, four weeks. Guess we’ll have to wait ’till then.

BlackBerry OS 4.5 Now Available for CDMA BlackBerry Pearl and BlackBerry Curve

Finally, a public release of BlackBerry OS is available for CDMA BlackBerry Pearl 8130 and BlackBerry Curve 8330 users. The downloads are from MTS Mobility, however, they will work on any 8130 or 8330.

I do want to warn you up front that the installation will take you about an hour or so and you may have to delete the vendor.xml file to get the install to run on your device, so, make sure you have time to go through this before you start.

You can find complete download and installation instructions over on BlackBerryForums in the Blackberry 8100 forum or BlackBerry 8330 forum depending on which device you use. Sorry BlackBerry 8703 and BlackBerry 8830 users… This update won’t work on your device, however, we hope that updates for you will become available in the not too distant future.

KeyToss Beta Adds New Functionality To Mobile Portal

The developer of KeyToss just let me know that they added a nice new feature to KeyToss. We told you about KeyToss before when the beta was originally released. It is essentially a customizable mobile portal for your BlackBerry browser with weather, RSS, and more. I personally just like the fact that it gives you easy access to 15 mobile search engines from one page. It also has a really good weather module.

With the new update you now have the ability to add over 650 RSS feeds to your personal account from your desktop browser. Right now the RSS feeds do not have images or great full article support but they are working on it. KeyToss is moving towards allowing you to completely customize KeyToss from your desktop & your BlackBerry.

CA & WA Laws Boost Bluetooth Headset Sales

Parrot is reporting that Bluetooth headset sales are hitting new highs in California and Washington due to their new cellphone laws. Its interesting to note that California gave out 7,182 tickets in July for breaking the law. In Washington a little more than 100 drivers were given tickets in July since they can only be ticketed if they are pulled over for something else.

I have been in the market recently for a black Jawbone 2 headset and found this decent deal on TechBargains. MacMall is offering the Jawbone for $108.72 with $5.99 shipping and tax in most states. On the other hand Shop4Tech has it for $116.96 after coupon shipped with tax only in California… You can find the deals on this page. Prices on Amazon are a bit less than $130.

On the other hand things are looking good for California residents using GPS devices. They are trying to pass a bill that will remove the $108 fine for mounting a GPS or practically any other device to your windshield. I almost got a ticket for that last time I was out in California.

Review: Notes2Self - Record & Email Yourself Voice Memos

At first I was a little skeptical about a 3rd party voice memo program but decided to give it a go. Many people will be served just fine with the built in voice recorder in OS 4.3+ if they have it. Once Notes2Self was downloaded, I noticed 2 icons on my BlackBerry. One was the program itself and the other (with the little wrench) was the options/settings. I didn’t like the fact that the program installed 2 icons onto my BlackBerry and would’ve benefited to have the options/setting set into the program like any other application.

Go into the setting menu and you’ll notice that the “send to” email is set for the Notes2Self generic email. It took me a minute to realize that my email address was supposed to go there. You can choose to send via an Email Message or WebIS Web Service on the “Send Via” drop down. The WebIS Web Service is a sending service that you have to register for at the website ([webis.net]) but I think that your email is sufficient enough. That is unless you have issues with large emails being sent from your device. I recommend that the Subject line stay exactly the way you see in the picture. It makes it easy to read when the email comes through. The next drop down option is the Notes Format. You can choose PCM or AMR. You also have the ability to set a completion sound to play once the email comes in. You can have the program play the sound or not simply by clicking on the “Play Sound” box.

Once your settings are to your liking, you can start sending yourself messages. Click on the Notes2Self icon that does not have the tiny wrench. As soon as you get into the program, you are already recording (with a slight few second delay). Send your message by hitting the green “Send” button and you can cancel by hitting the red “End Call” button.

Click on the Notes2Self icon and within a few seconds, it will automatically begin recording. Leave yourself a little message and then press the green “Talk” button to send your message which also takes a few seconds. You will receive your message within a a minute or two.

After playing with it for a few days, I was initially ready to give it a not too great rating due to the fact that it can take a bit to start the program and send the message. As far as I was concerned, it would’ve been easier to get a pen and write the information on my hand. But then I actually needed it to remember a few things that I needed to get done. Upon this revelation, I think that Notes2Self would be a decent program to have. Its not something that someone would use all the time but for a few times a week thing, it would be good. Otherwise the built in voice recorder in OS 4.3+ should be good enough. You can get a Notes2Self trial at PocketInformant.com for and if you like it, the full version is only $9.95

GPSed Version 0.999 Released

Stefano just let me know that GPSed released a new version of their GPS tracklog application. They definitely seem to be on their last beta release of GPSed unless they have plans for version .9999.

The new version lets you share tracks on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Blogger. They also added a new auto-zooming track preview screen in track recording mode. Other than that they got a couple of bugs fixed.

Kevin @ CrackBerry managed to score some more pictures of the Javelin. There are not pictures of the real device but they show off some of the major features. I guess this is starting to explain why everybody who plays with the device thinks it is the next Curve and slightly preferable to the Bold.

What I noticed:
- MicroUSB instead of the standard MiniUSB slot is confirmed. What a bummer
- Dedicated lock unlock button! Pretty cool stuff if you don’t use a holster.
- 3.2 megapixel camera with a glass cover! That will be a hit compared to the dust trap camera on the Curve…
- For some reason the MicroSD card slot is under the battery cover but you can change it without removing the battery.

Ever wanted to see what your BlackBerry is able to accomplish with a single application? No, I’m not talking world domination or even taking the trash out. I mean being able to respond to emails and send notes to yourself all with your voice and the occasional click of a button. Imagine the busy working mom who cannot stand still long enough to type out an important sales meeting reminder to her team. Or the college student with hands so full of books that he cannot type a response to his college professor about the Pythagorean theorem.

Well here comes the one application that everyone needs to try out. MyCaption for BlackBerry allows users to respond and compose emails with 2 clicks of a button. You can also send yourself important reminders so you don’t forget your anniversary again. Or that gallon of milk. MyCaption is a learning program so all you have to do to make it even more accurate (it’s very accurate as it is) is to continuously use it.

MyCaption is really easy to use. Click on “Reply (MyCaption)” to respond to an email or “Reply To All (MyCaption)” to respond to all email recipients. Then just start speaking. MyCaption will record your message, and once you’re done, just click on “Stop” and your words will be transcribed into text. (MyCaption also has a place in your Ringer Profile for a ringer or song or some sort of sound so you know when the transcription has been completed.) Then you can review the email for accuracy and send it off.

If you want to use the “Compose (MyCaption)”, all you have to do is say “Send to Bob”, “Subject Sales Meeting” “Message Tuesday is our weekly sales meeting. It will be at 10 am and will be held at Connor Hall”. Then click “Done” and it will be transcribed (log into the MyCaption website and enter email addresses of people you email into your account address book for easier sending.) You can also manually enter the receipient name and subject and then click “Dictate” and MyCaption will then record your message and transcribe it for you. Another good use is to compose notes to yourself. Just go to the “Compose (MyCaption)” and speak “Note to Self, Subject: Tim’s Birthday Party, Message: August 14th 2:00 pm”.

MyCaption has 2 types of services. The Standard Service which is a $9.99 monthly subscription that allows free short message transcriptions of 15 seconds or less and $.50 per message for 16 seconds to 3 minutes. The Flex Plan does not offer free short message transcriptions but offers message transcription of up to 3 minutes for $1 per message. MyCaption can be downloaded to your BlackBerry from MyCaption.com and you can sign up for a free 10-message trial.

MyCaption is very easy to use and is also very accurate out of the (proverbial) box. I recommend this to anyone who puts off responding to emails just because they’re a tad too busy! Now you don’t have an excuse as to why you didn’t respond to Aunt Magnus’ Sunday BBQ e-vite!
