Is this the RIM BlackBerry 9500 Thunder?

RIM's been rumored to be brewing up a serious iPhone competitor. The BlackBerry "AK" (Apple Killer) is believed to be the RIM BlackBerry 9500 Thunder, and a new image of the all-touchscreen device has reportedly surfaced on wireless retailer Horizon Wireless's website.

Stealing some of the newly announced BlackBerry 9000 Bold's thunder, the RIM BlackBerry 9500 Thunder has already been offered on a pre-order basis through Horizon Wireless. The website shows a blurred-out image of what looks to be a keyboard-less, all-touchscreen device with design-aesthetics that echo RIM's BlackBerry lineup.

Granted, the image is too blurred to call it a spy-shot of the rumored RIM BlackBerry 9500 Thunder. But, we like to feed our inner rumor-fiend every now and again.

Anyone planning to wait out the 3G iPhone launch in favor of the BlackBerry 9500 Thunder?

North American BIS outage possible June 7th-8th

The fine folks over at BB-Outage are letting everyone know about a possible BlackBerry Internet Service outage in North America running from June 7th-8th. Due to server upgrades, v.2.4 BIS subscribers may be unable to receive messages from integrated email accounts during the maintenance.

For those affected, please be prepared. Make sure to stock plenty of bottled water, spare batteries and possibly pen and paper to write your emails out by hand in preparation for the coming Emailpocalypse. Check out the down time for both days after the jump.

Questionable picture of touchscreen BlackBerry sends bloggers into tizzy

Horizon Wireless recently opened up preorders for the BlackBerry 9500 “Thunder”, a device which hasn’t even been announced yet, and yeah, we’ve been hearing about a touchscreen BlackBerry for a couple of eons now, but this is the first even vaguely solid evidence to date. The picture is extra-blurred, and covered in the Horizon logo, so there’s really not much there to comment on… Blogworthiness aside, RIM did give Horizon the legal backhand to remove the pictures, so you gotta think there was some legitimacy to the snap after all. Supposedly the shots were of a dummy version (i.e. just the housing), so more info is sure to come once it gets some guts. Cheers Chris!

RIM Details Steps For Selling & Buying A Used BlackBerry

Now this is a surprising step from RIM. They has just put up a knowledge base PDF file detailing:

Steps to take before selling, or after buying, a previously owned BlackBerry smartphone. (cropped screenshot of PDF below)

It is nice to see that RIM is making an effort to help users who have bought a used BlackBerry or are selling their BlackBerry. The document is pretty good but it is inherently flawed.

Personally I wish they would just make it easier to remove the association of a BlackBerry with a BIS account without having to call them or enter in another device. This causes hundreds of tech support calls

The other problem is that RIM does not make an easy process for reseting the device to default to remove an IT policy after it has been purchased if the device was previously associated with a BES. Now this problem will be exacerbated by the fact that BlackBerry Unite also adds an IT policy to devices.

RIM Takes Down OS 4.5.0.37 Beta From Partners Website

In a surprising move RIM has decided to take down the OS 4.5.0.37 from their partners website at www.BlackBerryuniverse.com. I wonder what prompted that?

Personally I think that RIM is always focusing on the cup half empty. This is the wrong approach. They should promote public beta testing to allow them to fix more of their bugs before they release the software. The people who install these OS Beta’s are serious BlackBerry users who would be glad to provide RIM with some insight and feedback. Instead of offering this to them and listening to their feedback they just snub their noses at them.

What does RIM have to lose? It is not like they charge for the updated OS? The only harm I can see is for the carrier who has to support a buggy OS. On the other hand they could solve that problem exactly the same way Microsoft does. They just have to say that this beta is unsupported. If you are having trouble please downgrade.

If even the bureaucratic Microsoft can see the benefits of a public beta why is RIM so close minded? Anybody have any ideas?

Opera Mini update for BlackBerry

This is a minor update — the version number, 4.1, will not even change. But if you’re running Opera on your BB, this is a recommended download.

I must admit before my years of blackberry abuse I was a die hard TREO fan, even switched back from the Blackberry 8800 to the Treo 750…but woke up and grabbed a Curve. But, while writing my latest for Blackberry Insight on my struggles to be a one device guy..no laptop..no desktop..just me and my Curve on the weekends and throughout most of the day. I realized that the Doomed Palm Foleo, was maybe on the cutting edge, we all love the qwerty keyboards, but I must admit that there is nothing better than a real keyboard for long assignments and long emails. The ability to see your blackberry screen and applications and access them on a 10, 12, or bigger screen would be glorious, I don’t want the start up time, or other 3rd party window apps or windows for that matter, I just want an instant on and offsee my Blackberry screen and type from a larger keyboard thingamajig , just a bluetooth keyboard and a screen, just to make it a little more comfortable and usable. So I started searching the net and found ALMOST what I wanted….ALMOST… here —> Bayalink Liberty
which gave me everything I wanted except more charges to my data, this happens because it render’s your blackberry screen through Firefox, or IE and you have more data being presented and requested, same with their mail attachment service….so it was close, but no cigar, I still need something similar but simpler, how about a bluetooth Monitor…..Anyone, Ferris, Bueller,…Then there is RedFly same Idea as the Foleo, but for Windows Smartphones only So what I have done is started to test out using a bluetooth keyboard with the Blackberry While having it plug into the usb of my laptop and using Rove Mobile Viewer. So know I can see my blackberry screen better in bigger format and use my bluetooth keyboard to type faster and for longer……..Have I solved my issue…..apparently not, Blackberry’s only work with a few Bluetooth Keyboards (mainly the stowaway type) none of which I have, so now I need to buy a keyboard…no biggie, but would still really like an ALL IN ONE solution, isn’t there anyone able to make a program to simulated the BB Screen on a PC and have the keyboard work as well……auuurgggggha.

So back to my original thought, a Foleo like companion for when you truly want to be mobile and as unplugged as cellular will let you be, even if you had no cellular connection you could still do it all from your BB and thingamabob, and then when you back within signal range send what you need.

Anyways I’m done my rant, if anyone knows of such a device, or knows of one coming down the wire,please let me know. Thanks from the aching thumbs, and my squinting eyes.

Where To Find Free E-Books For MobiPocket

I use MobiPocket every day to read books and magazines on my BlackBerry. Its great to always have a book in the bathroom too. The thing is that e-books get a bit expensive if you read as fast as I do so I found two great resources for free books.

www.ManyBooks.net – This site was first was brought to my attention by Josep. It is a great resource where you can find public domain books. The best part is that you can download them directly in MobiPocket format.

www.Gutenberg.org – This is the project Gutenberg website with over 25,000 free books to download. You will have to convert the books into MobiPocket format using the free desktop application.

Let me know if you find any more… Don’t forget to pick up MobiPocket E-Book reader for free from www.mobipocket.com or m.mobipocket.com from your BlackBerry.

Hayden of PinStack has a sharp eye. He noticed that the www.discoverblackberry.com portal has been merged into www.blackberry.com. DiscoverBlackBerry.com was the portal for individuals to separate the business BlackBerry users from the consumer BlackBerry users. For example the business section would cover BES and the consumer section would showcase the MP3 player and camera.

It seems like RIM has forgone that dual pronged approach. They have merged the consumer and business targeted sides of their website.

Hayden explains the move by saying that the upcoming BlackBerry Bold will merge the consumer and business BlackBerry devices into one. For that reason there is no need for separate portals. This makes sense since the front page of the now combined portal is a feature on the BlackBerry Bold.

I am curious to see if this will change RIM’s current strategy of pitching the 8100 & 8300 devices differently than the 8800 series. Will the BlackBerry Bold be the one to rule both domains?

iPhone Loses Market Share To BlackBerry In Q1

I was listening to Squawk Box this morning and they were saying that Apple stock was down due to loss of market share on of the iPhone to the BlackBerry. I thought that this was intersting so I looked a little deeper.

Research in Motion had a 44.5% of the market in Q1 compared to 35.1% in the previous quarter. The iPhone, on the other hand, is still in the number two spot, however, sits at just 19.2% market share down from 26.7% in Q4 last year.

We will have to see how all this plays out once the 3G iPhone comes out…

Time.mobi - Time Magazine Mobile Website

This one needs no introduction. I know I barely manage to read Time magazine (have to finish with Fortune and BusinessWeek) but I found this to be a great replacement.

www.Time.mobi is a perfect website to pass the time when you are waiting a the doctors office and don’t want to read 3 year old magazines.

I am not sure yet what the limitations are but the site renders perfectly on my BlackBerry. Let me know what you think.

Nearly 1 of every 2 Smartphones Sold in America is a BlackBerry

The internet is buzzing this morning on word that America's Most Popular Smartphone IS NOT the iPhone. According to research firm IDC, the iPhone took 19.2% of the US market for smartphones in the first quarter of 2008, while good ole Research in Motion cleaned up with a whopping 44.5%!

A while back RIM's coCEO Mike Lazaridis made a comment that if anything the iPhone was going to help BlackBerry sales, since they are doing a good job of making smartphones more cool. It seems Mike is a smart guy, as RIM's share is up from 35.1% from the fourth quarter of last year. For more details, and to see the runners up, you can read the full article here.

It'll be interesting to see how the next 6 months go. Apple will be releasing the 3G iPhone which should boost their numbers, but RIM will also have the BlackBerry Bold hitting the market (and maybe a KickStart and Thunder to boot) and sells via more than one carrier. It'll be a good battle, but hopefully RIM will keep the top podium position for a longgg time to come.

One of the main issues with the BlackBerry platform has always been the lack of free and inexpensive 3^rd party software. Even the most trivial applications are $10–$20. Other than Viigo and a select few other applications there are very few free services available to the BlackBerry user.

Comparatively many BlackBerry users have come from the Symbian, Windows Mobile, & Palm OS where there is a plethora of free and cheap applications for the picking.

So this begs the question why is the BlackBerry so different?

Turns out Neil of the developer of BBsmart has an answer on DevBerry.com. I am curious to see what all of you think? Why do you think there is such a limited number of quality BlackBerry applications?

5 Reasons Why RIM Should Make A BlackBerry That Runs Android

Someone asked me the other day what I thought about Android, Google’s mobile operating system that happens to be open and free, and the first thing that came to mind was that Research in Motion should build a handset that runs Android.

I really would like to hear what you guys think here in the comments, but, here a a few reasons why I think this could be a huge hit for RIM.
- Reliability –The BlackBerry has the reputation of being one of the most reliable pieces of hardware in the industry. I know that a much of the hardware stability comes from the fact that RIM creates the software that runs on BlackBerrys, but, the devices themselves are sturdy and RIM can bank on this when compared to other manufactures.
- Android Is Free — Google isn’t charging anything for Android. This will allow any manufacture, RIM included, to create smartphones a a very low price point. I believe that keyboards on cellphones of tomorrow will be a ubiquitous as cameras on cell phones of today. This will enable RIM to create a very inexpensive Smartphone that could probably be 100% subsidized by the carriers who offer it.
- Android Is Open — Just think of how much better a web browser Firefox is over Internet Explorer. The fact that you have a global developer community working on Android as compared to just a small group of them that all work for Google will allow Android to always be on the cutting edge. Open software efforts is one area where the mob is usually smarter than the small group and the reliability factor we talk about in our first point would even be further enhanced.
- Google Is Behind Android — This point really needs no further explanation. Google is the most impressive tech company we’ve since Microsoft. Google getting into the mobile game will be the biggest thing to hit the industry since the iPhone came out last year and in the grand scheme of things, may turn out to be even bigger globally.
- Younger Demographics — RIM would have a huge opportunity to get their devices into the hands of very young, internet addicted consumers, who live on MySpace and YouTube. Android smartphones will start of cheap and parents will get them for their kids if they cost them nothing more than the plan they were already going to get. Kids who use BlackBerrys turn into adults who use BlackBerrys.
I can probably think of just as many reasons why RIM shouldn’t create a device that runs Android but, I will leave that for you guys to discuss in the comments.

Fuzzy image of BlackBerry Thunder, now removed

I caught this on Friday, but honestly didn’t think much of it. A supposed picture of the Blackberry Thunder popped up at Horizon Wireless. Of course, everyone jumped. I’ll post the picture after the jump, so you can see it in its blurred glory. Obviously, the stuff at the top of the page — the BlackBerry logo, the words “Thunder” and the model number “9500″ — are Photoshopped. What’s in question is the Big Foot-esque picture. It has since been removed from Horizon’s site, and has been rumored to be “just the housing.” I feel bad about even posting this, because it’s really nothing. But hey, some people want this, so here it is.

Anyone excited?

Packing my bags ready to get going to ILUG 2008 in Dublin, and really looking forward to what should be another great event. Can I just say kudos to RIM as they are shiny bright Platinum Sponsors again this year, in other words they really help make ILUG happen.

OK, looking at the agenda the BlackBerry highlights to catch are:

Wednesday - "Automating User and Group Management for Domino, Active Directory and BlackBerry. Or 'how to save a buttload of work" - Bill Buchan will take you through how HADSL specialise in the automation, integration and delegation of all user and group management across Lotus Domino, Active Directory and BlackBerry. This means that you can delegate all your day-to-day user management to someone on the helpdesk (or even HR!), confident that only what YOU allow will be implemented, whilst increasing security.

Thursday - "Taking Lotus Collaboration beyond the office on your BlackBerry Smartphone" - Valerie Wang, Product Manager for IBM technologies at RIM will be talking about how you can use the BlackBerry development platform to mobilise your enterprise applications as well as how the close collaboration between IBM Lotus and RIM have led to even more Lotus collaboration and communication tools such as Sametime and Connections, available for BlackBerry smartphones. I saw Valerie present at Lotusphere and she was very good.

Friday - "Ask the BES Adminstrator" - Jen Ortiz of RIM will be back at ILUG again this year for a highly interactive session which will give you the opportunity to ask questions, hear about Best Practice and see a BES in action - so bring along your questions and devices.

And of course some other Notesberry people will be there too, like Paul Mooney and Tim Davis. Plus a crew from RIM too.

So hope you can make it, and see you there if you can.

Palringo brings free IM for most phones including BlackBerry

We have always been a fan of third party instant messaging apps for BlackBerry. We have seen JiveTalk and IM+ become big hits. BBcool just got wind of a new one called Palringo, which has introduced a new multi account IM program for BlackBerry smartphones.

Palringo is a free over the air download to your BlackBerry and has support for Windows Live, Yahoo!, AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber and a few others. You can download it OTA by clicking here from your mobile phone.

Touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder 9500 spotted?

Take this one with a grain of salt. Engadget is showing a picture which looks like a cheesy photoshop mock up of supposedly the rumored touchscreen BlackBerry (Thunder 9500). The picture which was originally shown over at a company called Horizon Wireless. It's now being rumored that its not the actual unit itself but just a housing for the upcoming smartphone.

So we aren't too sure what to think about this one.

Da ist bei mir doch gleich die Frage aufgekommen, wann es denn moeglich sein wird, BlackBerry-Andwendungen auf dem iPhone zu starten. Vielleicht gibt es ja bereits ein derartiges Open-Source-Projekt?

WHERE现在有和黑莓连接的设置了，我想这个软件和网站应该是刚刚运行的并且只能够做与黑莓相关的事情………由于他是一个免费的软件，我一直喜欢关于GPS的软件. 但是WHERE这个软件真的很让我难忘，不仅是因为它的功能，而且它还是居于你所在的位置…… 即使是加拿大的一个小镇，WHERE能够帮你找到当地消息，油价，咖啡，租车等等，都在我所在的地方…… 棒吧！

我曾今也见过类似的产品，但是它们都只能在比较大的城市中才能进行查找，很多都是美国的大城市，或者是你还的订阅相关的信息；你所查找的地方要在搜索的方位之内. 可是WHERE真的很简单，实用！你可以从它强大的功能中把你想要的工具直接拖动到屏幕上，一会就能清楚看到了. 朋友们，我对这个软件征得很感兴趣并且期待大家发表更多的看法到Blackberry Review 或者是发表评论到K和 Blackberry Insight网站中的评论栏中.

We Need Your Help to spread the Buzz

So first this post has nothing to do with BlackBerry so for our followers we thought we should be clear upfront but we are asking for your help. A few weeks ago we launched our latest website called Student Sleuths (www.studentsleuths.com) and did our press release to the world, click here to check it out. Student Sleuths is completely free to all that will use it. The purpose of Student Sleuth’s is to connect students looking for jobs with employers looking for employees and we accomplish this in two ways. First students can complete an on-line profile, completely free which will enable employers to search our databases and connect with students that meet their criteria. Employers can search our database completely free, see a theme here. Lastly, employers can post job ads on Student Sleuths, once again, what’s that word, free and students can search those ads completely free.

So how do we need your help, well we can all use help. If you know a student looking for a summer job, tell them about Student Sleuths and encourage them to register. If you know someone that is looking for students or know someone in an human resources (HR) department, drop them a note and let them know about Student Sleuths. Student Sleuths is open to everyone on planet earth, were delaying the galactic launch until we find life on other planets.

If you know someone in an HR department but don’t want to tell them, send us their contact information. We will be doing a postcard launch to members of the Fortune 500 within the month and maybe showing up in student handbooks this fall. We’re kind of stuck in what came first the chicken or the egg and in our case, we need to get both sides familiar with Student Sleuths if we are going to make a connection.
