One big BlackBerry conference (WES) per year just doesn’t cut any longer for Research in Motion so they’ve decided to give all of the BlackBerry developers a conference of their own and have announced the new annual BlackBerry Developer Conference.

The BlackBerry Developer Conference will make its inaugural debut later this year the week of October 20th in Santa Clara, California.

This is fresh off the press folks: a friend at Rove just told me that they’ve given away their first of three $1000 Amazon.com gift certificates to one Jeff Kucaj, who was lucky enough to have the key that fit the magic box. There are still two keys left, so make sure to stop by their booth (#248).
Of course, if your key doesn’t fit, you still have another way to make a quick grand by participating in Chalk’s ‘How much do you love your BlackBerry?’ contest. Head to booth 114 for more info on how you can win.
Not at WES? Don’t worry! You can still win a sweet BlackBerry Cool prize pack. READ THIS POST to find out how easy it is to win.

Rogers has gone all official-like in it’s BlackBerry Bold availability, but we scoped out Vodafone’s booth at WES, and they were flashing the new handset pretty prominently in their ads. Of course, some of the first glimpses of the BlackBerry 9000 were off of a leaked Vodafone slide and a Rogers doc lambasted with “STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL”, so that’s no huge surprise. Good on Rogers for having a notification system set up, though - some of their BlackBerry releases were disturbingly quiet. AT&T has the U.S. exclusive, but you can expect the Bold from these carriers internationally this summer.

Just wanted to drop a link to BlackBerry Cool, who liveblogged the keynote this morning. That takes some endurance. I talk, of course, about the BlackBerry Bold and its super-duper, amazing browser — plus a great way to personalize the device. Oh yeah, and the real iPhone killer. This time, it’s for real.
So go download the podcast (4 min, 20 sec)
And make sure to subscribe to the podcast so you can catch all of our WES updates.

Bwuh? No tactile keypad, just four buttons and a bigass touchscreen? The patents don’t lie for a change, and a recent interview with co-CEO Jim Balsillie would indicate that a touchscreen is in RIM’s potential future. It’s supposedly going to be a dual-mode device (EV-DO rev. C, and HSPA) and launching internationally, exclusively on Verizon and Vodafone. Now, this thing is still in its extremely early stages, so plenty can change, but still an exciting prospect, especially considering BG is probably at WES talking to someone who knows a thing or two about the project.

Here it is folks, our first of two WES 2008 Special Edition Podcasts.
As promised, we had a HUGE crew on hand at the Boxtone Lounge to record the show. Craig unfortunately was not in attendance, but I'd like to give a BIG THANKS to the Crack Team we did have on hand - Jibi, Dieter, Bill, Dante, Robert and Martin. I think we deserve an award for most people on a podcast at one time.
This podcast is all WES 2008. We talk BlackBerry Bold, WES festivities, device rumors and in true CrackBerry fashion we go off topic a bit and get a little dirty (Jibi's fault!).
We had one rule going into the Podcast - NO EDITING - so it's uncensored and raw. Take a listen and be sure to report back with your comments and questions. We'll be coming at you again tomorrow, maybe with an even BIGGER crew. Enjoy the show!!

Nothing too big to report on from this morning's General Session at WES (we live Twittered it if you want to check the details), but did receive some video footage and thought I'd upload it to share. At top we have RIM's CEO Mike Lazaridis talking about the BlackBerry Bold and after the jump a video of Mike talking about Innovation.

I guess RIM is really serious about reaching out to their developers. They have decided to break off a chunk of WES with a new announced BlackBerry Developer Conference. This years conference is planned for October 20, 2008 in Santa Clara, California. The new conference is intended to help developers keep up with the latest hardware, software, tools and best practices for BlackBerry development. More info can be found at www.blackberrydeveloperconference.com. You can also sign up at that link to get more info and keep in the loop about developments.
My favorite part of this whole announcement is this:
Rich Internet Application Development - Learn about the latest advancements in developing Rich Internet Applications (RIA) for BlackBerry smartphones and how to take advantage of AJAX, streaming video, SVG, GPS, and other advanced features of the BlackBerry Browser.
Yes that does say AJAX, Streaming Video, SVG (Mobile Flash), & GPS all from your Browser. Pretty cool stuff. I know quite a few developers including Neil of DevBerry.com that will be real happy to hear about this!
You can read the full press release after the jump.

One of our readers just sent us a great link. Michael Pereria got a BlackBerry cake for his 30th birthday courtesy of his understanding and loving wife. I guess this is a perfect gift for the BlackBerry user who has it all. Either that or a great gag gift to drop off on Mike Lazaridis’s doorstep.
Unfortunately, no specs are provided so we can’t tell whether it’s actually made with Blackberries. That would be extra crunchy, we guess. But judging by the looks of it and a little experience from childhood, we’re guessing it’s arguably the first hybrid keyboard-AND-touchscreen Blackberry ever made. Be sure to wash your hands beforehand. If Mike would be so kind to mail us a piece, we’ll be glad to write a review.
Congratulations, Michael! Thanks, anonymous tipper!
Check out all 20 pictures of the cake at this link. If you like it feel free to digg it.
Bye-Bye BlackBerry Thumb
Since you're reading this review on CrackBerry.com, you're very likely familiar with the condition commonly referred to as "BlackBerry Thumb." For this reason, I won't get into too much detail, but BlackBerry Thumb comes about after excessive use of the tiny keyboard found on a wide variety of RIM devices and other smartphones. As a rule of "thumb," the more frequently you respond to e-mail or send messages using that tiny keyboard, the more prone to the condition you are.
What's the best way to avoid BlackBerry thumb, you ask? Well, reducing the amount of typing you're doing is probably your best bet. If that's not an option, or at least one you're willing to consider, increasing the size of your keyboard is sure to help. Constant use of any keyboard can potentially lead to hand and wrist pain, possibly even to carpal tunnel syndrome over time, but if you need to type frequently, you're much better off with a larger keyboard.
In comes the Freedom Universal Keyboard from Freedom Input Ltd, which is available in the ShopCrackBerry.com for $99.95. The keyboard connects to your BlackBerry via Bluetooth and makes for a great way to handle inbox maintenance and rapid messaging. It's about the size of an average laptop keyboard and is a great alternative to the small keyboard found on your device.
It seems RIM was way ahead of me on this one. I made mention in yesterday's WES Review that the top accessory for the BlackBerry Bold will likely be replacement Battery Doors. Turns out RIM is thinking the same thing and already had some on hand to show off. The colors above are a good start... and I hope they even BOLDER and funkier from here. Big thanks to Al for the tip off.

Rumors, being what they are, should be taken with a grain of salt. That said, the newest rumor to leak out of Waterloo indicates that RIM is brewing up a serious all-touchscreen contender to the iPhone. The rumored handset, known as the RIM BlackBerry 9500 "Thunder" is said to release as a Verizon Wireless/Vodafone exclusive - possibly making up for Verizon's decision to pass on the Apple iPhone (Steve Jobs's first choice for the iPhone's exclusive network operator).
We're hearing that the BlackBerry Thunder will sport some sort of trick EVDO Rev. C radio mated to a GSM/HSPA radio that will work in tandem to bring high-speed data to its customers. There's also a chance that the 4G LTE data-standard will be supported in the BlackBerry Thunder.
The rumors of an all touchscreen BlackBerry falls in line with previous rumors that RIM was working on a touchscreen-based iPhone-killer, known to RIM engineers as the BlackBerry "AK" (Apple Killer). Could the new BlackBerry 9500 Thunder be stealing the newly announced Blackberry 9000 Bold's, well, thunder as the commercial incarnation of the Blackberry AK?
It would make sense for RIM to finally bring touchscreen interface to the BlackBerry lineup, and we have a hunch that the BlackBerry AK will launch as the BlackBerry 9500 Thunder. But, like it says above - take all this with a grain of salt.

Review: Rove Mobile File Manager
Rating: 5 out of 10 stars 5/10
www.rovemobile.com
Cost: Free!
Well the folks at Rove really impressed me with the first two products I reviewed (Mobile Admin and Mobile Viewer), but Mobile File Manager really fell short for me. The claims from Rove are pretty impressive:
Mobile File Manager allows you to connect to remote file servers. Edit web pages and deploy sites, upload photos to websites, transfer files, view graphics on remote computers, edit configuration files, monitor log files, and much more - all from your handheld device.
Read the rest of the review and let me know if you agree or have been experiencing the same problems…
Mobile File Manager supports Windows File Sharing, WebDAV, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Secure FTP (SFTP) connections.
Minimum system requirements
Security:

For the record I used a T-Mobile 8820 with OS version 4.2.2.193 while conducting my tests. Wether most of the claims are true or not, I couldn’t really tell. For the most part I could not get the majority of the stuff to work. Sure it will let you browse the file system on the BlackBerry, which is nice, but not terribly useful. FTP connections were dicey at best… I was able to connect to a Windows FTP server but had no luck with a Novell and UNIX FTP server. I thought FTP was FTP ? Right ? Oh, and niether server was behind a firewall.
I was however able to connect to a Windows share on my internal network and also browse my Windows network, which was pretty cool. The WebDAV connection claim worked on an IIS Web Share on my internal network but I could not get one on the Internet to work. I have a Box.net account which they specifically mention in one of thier knowledge base articles. For those of you who are not familiar with WebDAV and Box.net….. WebDAV stands for “Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning”. It is a set of extensions to the HTTP protocol which allows users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote web servers. Box.net is an Internet storage and sharing site ([box.net]). Anyway that is one of the WebDAV sites you should be able to connect to, however I tried a few different configurations and could not actually see any of my files private or public. I thought it was the MDS connection on my BES but I also tried BIS, Wi-Fi and straight TCP/IP with no luck either. I also checked to make sure I had no restrictions from my BES through policy and I didn’t.
I guess the thing that bothered me the most was even with the stuff I could connect to I would often get a “File System Disconnected” message. Hey I get that file transfer is not going to be the fastest because of bandwidth limitations but i got a warning that the file I was trying to copy was ove 50K and I was asked if I was sure I wanted to do that. It was a 1MB mp3 file !

This just left me very disappointed. I found it very frustrating. If anyone has had a better experience then I did please let me know.

It was certainly easy to overlook while playing with the BlackBerry Bold. With the new OS, including the browser (I’m probably going to mention the browser in every post), physical aspects of the device are easy to glaze over. Especially when those physical aspects are on the back of the device. One of the neat new features of the Bold is the removable back cover. It’s a textured leather feel, and I was lucky enough to see what the new skins are going to look like. They’re nothing more than you’d really expect. However, because they do cover the entire back of the device, they provide a good opportunity to personalize your BlackBerry Bold. After the jump, you can take a glimpse for yourself.
Surely, there will be more colors available than this. And you can bet that plenty of accessories companies are going to be making ones with pretty designs and the like. Initially, though, there should be a number available for purchase, and they’ll probably look like the ones pictured.
This post originated at BBGeeks.com which not only features in-depth reviews of BlackBerry software, but is home to all things other things BlackBerry as well.
We’ve known for some time that RIM is working on a touchscreen BlackBerry. We didn’t know that the device would be code named the BlackBerry Thunder and that it could be a lifetime exclusive to Verizon and Vodafone.
Lets let that sink in for a minute. Not only could the touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder be coming to Verizon first in the U.S., it may only ever be offered by Verizon.
The BlackBerry Thunder will have a touch screen only. According to BGR, the first touchscreen BlackBerry will not have a slide out keyboard and only have 4 physical keys. Rumor also has it that the BlackBerry Thunder will by a hybrid device with CDMA EV-DO Rev. C and GSM HSPA for when you traveling internationally.
For clarification, Rev C., known as UMB is practically dead. If the device will indeed launch with a 4G solution, our bet is on LTE
I’ve been debating or not if I want to buy the new Verizon BlackBerry Curve. I don’t really need it, as my 8130 is working just fine. I believe that I will wait to here bit more about the BlackBerry Thunder. If this is really coming out next quarter, I think that I just might have to wait for it and forego the Curve.

I’ve been kickin’ it with the BlackBerry Bold for most of the morning, which has been quite the experience. It’s great because the device is a true upgrade from the 88xx series. Even if they updated nothing but the browser, OS 4.6 would still be worth it. The downside is that it’s a GSM device, meaning us poor saps on Verizon, Sprint, Alltel, or U.S. Cellular are stuck waiting. Turns out, though, that it might not be for long. BGR is reporting on the BlackBerry Thunder, a full touchscreen device that looks to mimic the iPhone. And yes, it will be a CDMA exclusive, heading first to Verizon and Vodafone. I’ll post the mock up after the jump.
This makes sense for RIM. They’d do little good trying to edge the iPhone off its own turf — AT&T, that is. Rather, they’re sending it over to the CDMA side, where there have been many devices that have tried to be the iPhone, but have failed miserably.
The lesson: There is only one iPhone. But something tells me that if any company can put out a better device, it’s RIM. Remember, this is their specialty.

Rogers has just confirmed that they will be launching the BlackBerry Bold in Canada! While they don't announce any launch dates or pricing they simply made a coming soon page. You can asked to be notified when the Bold launches. Visit the Rogers website for details.

This morning fans of the mobile.blackberry.com website woke up to a surprise. The official mobile site published by RIM has undergone a complete overhaul. . . or underhaul as the case may be.
The site in my opinion has always been slightly underwhelming, as most mobile sites are to someone with a design background. I don’t claim to have any groundbreaking advice or ideas about how to spruce them up, but I can never claim to be impressed. Yahoo Go! is to date the only mobile experience I have had that was worth it’s salt.
In the latest incarnation of the mobile.BlackBerry website has gone to a really basic design with a branded bar at the top of the display and substantial blocky icons associated with each of the main categories.
There is a quick links section available at the top of the home page which sends you off to the latest news and accessories etc.
Below all of this you will find the options to view the site in various supported languages including: Dutch, Spanish, French and Italian.
Getting around the site is as easy as it ever was, the navigation icons are straight forward and easy to identify by text or graphic. Wish they would add a search function though. It is a pain to have to keep scrolling my trackwheel to browse a whole section of the site to see if anything has been added.
Overall, I am not blown away by the design that RIM has put forth and that seems to be the popular sentiment. Check it out and you will see for yourself.
A big thanks goes out to davepeckens for the heads up!
Here are a few screenshots of the new design:

This post originated at BBGeeks.com which not only features in-depth reviews of BlackBerry software, but is home to all things other things BlackBerry as well.
Big Shout out to JHard who just posted this in the forums... it seems us Canadians can officially start getting excited about the BlackBerry Bold - a web page on Rogers.com has been launched allowing you to sign up to be notified when the BlackBerry Bold becomes available.
Little mistake on the Roger's written copy though...they say the Bold is sporting a 640 x 240 pixel resolution (it's actually 480 by 320). No worries though, we'll forgive Rogers for the typo since when the Bold does hits Rogers it'll be rock'n 3G speeds.

First of all, you might ask why we did not report about the new BlackBerry Bold that has been officially launched yesterday. Well, it is pretty easy: everyone else did!
However, sometimes we find some interesting news that are not that obvious to all BlackBerry users so we bring that to you. We just found a statement of Telstra at c|net Australia which says:
“Telstra looks forward to bringing the Next G BlackBerry to customers in coming months,” […] “BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM) also issued a follow-up statement announcing an agreement with Microsoft to bring Windows Live Services, including Hotmail and Messenger, to the BlackBerry suite of applications in the coming months.”
So it seems the Windows Live Search, Hotmail and Messanger are coming to the Bold anyway, no matter you are on Telstra in Aussieland or on T-Mobile in the US. However, we tested the Windows Live Search for BlackBerry devices already and really cannot say it works well. Perhaps this is enough content for a new review article? It will not be good for Windows Live Search, unfortunately.
