BlackBerry Curve now available on Verizon

Verizon said we'd be getting the BlackBerry Curve 8330 in May, and it looks like the company is right on schedule: RIM's latest is now available with a two-year contract for $219 and a $50 rebate. Specs are exactly the same as we've known forever, which means there's no WiFi, but that's not going to stop any of you, now is it?

P.S.- Sorry, Sprint subscribers, we still don't know when you're getting this one, apart from "mid-May."

Oi, Verizon now has the Curve

Talk about a runaround. After seeing earlier today that we might have to wait until mid-month for the Curve on Sprint and Verizon, we find out once again that we were the victims of misinformation. Of course, Phone Arena pulled a cut and run with their piece (you’ll notice the broken link in the last one), and yeah, I’m just a little pissed off. Why? Because Verizon’s Curve appears to be available (with a tip o’ the hat to Engadget Mobile.

I apologize for the misinformation earlier. Last time I trust that site for any information.

Lets Clear Up The BlackBerry Niagara BlackBerry Javelin Confusion

Just yesterday we wrote a post about the 3G-less BlackBerry 9000 code named the BlackBerry Niagara. At least we thought it was code named the BlackBerry Niagara. The non 3G bearing BlackBerry 9000 is actually code named the BlackBerry Javelin and, believe it or not, the BlackBerry Niagara is a EV-DO variant of the device.

Rumor has it that the EV-DO bearing BlackBerry Niagara is supposed to debut sometime in May of 2009. BGR, nor do we, feel that a May 2009 release date sounds quite right. That being said we didn’t think that it would take a year when we asked how long would it take for Verizon to come out with the BlackBerry Curve.

That particular post was written May 6th, 2007. 365 days and 1219 comments later it is still going strong.

Fresh BlackBerry 9000 shots

The boys over at CrackBerry have tested the will of the eBay gods and purchased a pre-release BlackBerry 9000 online. There’s not much there that you haven’t heard before (i.e., the screen is nice, and it’s between a Curve and the BlackBerry 8800 size-wise), but there’s nothing wrong with some more BlackBerry 9000 eye candy. We’ll keep you informed if any new information surfaces.

RIM offering BlackBerry 9000 in EDGE and EVDO Rev. A flavors - BlackBerry Javelin and BlackBerry Niagara

Well, it looks like CDMA network subscribers won't be left out in the cold when RIM goes live with their sleeker BlackBerry 9000. Word has it that RIM is preparing two different BlackBerry 9000 variants - the BlackBerry Javelin and BlackBerry Niagra. The former is the EDGE-based BlackBerry 9000 that we all know and love, while the latter will apparently be the a BlackBerry 9000 variant with EVDO support. Which is to say, the BlackBerry Javelin will launch sporting EDGE and 3G data connectivity for GSM networks and the BlackBerry Niagra will be the handling EVDO Rev. A data for the CDMA side of things.

Both handsets will feature the 480×360 display, large QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera, BES 5.0 support and of course similar (if not the same) physical dimensions and design. The GSM version of the BlackBerry 9000 (BlackBerry Javelin) will support quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM, GPS, BlackBerry OS 4.6, WiFi, and an ArgonV processor. On the other hand, the CDMA version of the BlackBerry 9000 (BlackBerry Niagra) should hit the market with aGPS, BlackBerry OS 4.7, and Qualcomm MSM7600 processor in tow.

Overall, both devices seem to offer similar feature sets, with the exception of the CDMA BlackBerry 9000 forgoing the GPS variant's WiFi radio in favor of aGPS and BlackBerry OS 4.7. Of course, seeing as how the BlackBerry Niagra is set to launch in May of 2009 (CDMA subscribers are always last in line), it makes sense that it launches with an updated OS.

We'll be keeping an eye out for more details on the BlackBerry 9000 - and the iPhone-fighting BlackBerry AK. Stay tuned.

We already got a somewhat vague peek at the 3G-less Blackberry 9000, but it looks like there are actually two upcoming models of RIM's new hotness on the board -- the EDGE version we know about, codenamed Niagara, and an EV-DO edition codenamed Javelin, slated for Verizon. Boy Genius managed to unearth quite a bit more information on these two, and unsurprisingly, they're basically the same as the 9000 we've already seen. Both have a 480 x 320 half-VGA screen, GPS functionality and 3.2 megapixel camera, but only the EDGE-based Niagara gets Wi-Fi. Sprint, Verizon to get the Curve on May 15

What’s that you say? Sprint won’t be releasing the Curve tomorrow? What a shock. And Verizon won’t be dropping theirs on Friday? I can’t say I wasn’t prepared for such an announcement. But according to Phone Arena, both companies are eying May 15 for the release. The delay is supposedly due to buggy firmware. If May 15 passes without a release from either company, I won’t be surprised in the least.

Update: Yeah, this is total bunk. VZW’s Curve is available online right now. Sprint’s? Not so much.

BlackBerry 9000 gets a very early review

We're all about reviews of products before they're released, but reviewing something before it's even been officially confirmed by a company is its own special brand of magnificent. Granted, these are more like the hands-on impressions of a self-confessed BlackBerry addict, who was willing to fork over $828 US on the off chance that the eBay auction the other day was actually legit. A week later Kevin of CrackBerry.com has the BlackBerry 9000 in hand and seems to be loving every minute of it. Apparently the keyboard is better than the 8800 series, the OS4.6 is smooth, fast and pretty, and the 480 x 320 LCD is "awesome." And don't get Kevin started on 3G: the logo alone brought a tear to his eye -- we're clearly dealing with a bona fide fanboy here. That said, it's an encouraging sign to see all those leaked shots weren't just for show, there's a real-live performer behind the legend. Kevin's major caveat is the size and weight of the phone, compared to his Curve, but we're sure the $828 hole in his checking account will have him coming to terms with that drawback in the near future. He'll be posting more details and impressions as he goes.

HTC Touch Diamond goes up against the iPhone

The new touch-screen handset from HTC is slimmer than Apple’s iPhone and runs on the faster 3G network

HTC, the Taiwanese handset manufacturer, has laid down the gauntlet to Apple with a slender new phone that aims to dislodge the iPhone’s from its position as the pre-eminent touch-screen device.

HTC said that its new handset - called the Touch Diamond - was just 11.3mm thick, giving it a 0.3mm edge on the iPhone, and had a more responsive screen, meaning that typing - traditionally the bugbear of touch-screen phones - was much easier.

Vodafone Wins Deal to Sell IPhone in 10 Countries

May 6 (Bloomberg) — Vodafone Group Plc, the world’s largest mobile-phone company, won a contract to sell Apple Inc.’s iPhone this year in 10 countries with a total population of more than 1.4 billion, including Australia, India and Italy.

Vodafone will also offer the iPhone in the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey, the Newbury, England-based company said in a statement today. Milan-based Telecom Italia SpA will also sell the iPhone in Italy by the end of the year, it said in a separate statement today.

Free VE Blue Zen Theme For The BlackBerry 8100 Pearl

Zach the Z Man and Gary from Viral Electronics have turned around and created a blue version of the Pink theme they released earlier. In my opinion the theme looks much better in blue since it makes the icons stick out and easier to tell apart. Once again all the icons are custom but they are also the same color which is a bit difficult on the eyes. I still love the top bar which is what makes the theme stick out.

Once again this theme is available for Desktop Manager download only. Hopefully Gary will work tirelessly day and night to get OTA installations up soon.

It’s not the Niagra, it’s the Javelin

It appears that RIM is trying to cross up us Internet types who like to talk about their devices well before they’re announced. Yesterday, we learned about the Niagra, which was supposedly the BlackBerry 9000, just without 3G. But that turns out not to be the case. Instead, the Javelin is the 3G-less 9000 model. So what of the Niagra? Turns out, that’s going to be the EVDO version of the 9000, which is slated to hit Verizon in about a year. All this information is solid for now, unless it changes sometime in the future, which it most certainly will. Specs for both models after the jump.

The Niagra:

I’d get, like, $90 off the $175 fee. As long as the subsidy for the new one is more than $85, I’m golden.

Preview Of Simprit MiuTunes Beta MP3 Player

Simprit, the makers of GridMagic, currently has a new media player called MiuTunes, undergoing beta testing. Sadly the Beta seems to be currently closed but you can sign up for future Betas at this link.

With MiuTunes you can “flip” through your music just like Flipside but with more of the iPhone “swishy” feel. MiuTunes can read music from your media card or phone memory only if its .m4a or .MP3. As of right now, .wma is not supported but hopefully Simprit will also add this.

There are several ways to view your music on the main menu: Artwork, Albums, Songs, Artist, Genre, Year and Playlists. If you choose the Artwork option (which gives the best overall view), the MiuTunes has the ability to pick up album covers from the internet just like Flipside.

Also in the Artwork Option is the “Song Info” option which gives you the ability to click on the album or artist name for a bio on the album or artist. All other options are pretty straightforward.

The actual use of the media player is very easy. The only problems noticed for a beginner would be the shortcuts. It would be ideal and easier for a media program to use the “p” for play, “f” for forward and so on. The shortcuts currently being used are: “space” for play/pause, “hold space” for stop, “enter” for next track, and “del” for previous track. You use the phone volume controls for the music volume.

There is a shuffle option and a repeat option available by using the shortcuts “alt-s” for shuffle and “alt-r” for repeat. Which just happens to be the easiest shortcuts for MiuTunes.

Overall, MiuTunes seems to be a well thought out media program and will be a great asset for any BlackBerry abuser who uses their BlackBerry for entertainment as well as everything else. It’ll take a few to learn shortcuts but it’ll be totally worth it for the person wanting the coolest media player available.

Seems as though there was confusion surrounding the BlackBerry 9000 and it's lack of 3G-ness. Code names were being thrown out, one 'Javelin' and the other of course 'Niagara'. BGR has learned that the Niagara model is the EV-DO device scheduled to hit Verizon in May of 2009. Seems like a long ways away for info leaks to be coming out about it?

Looks like we were right when we first heard the Javelin name, as Kevin & Craig talked about it in the last podcast. Gotta pat Bla1ze on the back for that one. Both of these devices are looking very similar in appearance, but that's nothing new for BlackBerry.

So, are you going to be able to wait 'till May 2009? Or should we get Kevin to score you an advanced test unit!? :) Way to go Kevin on the BlackBerry 9000 purchase!

[ Note from Kevin - Two strange things in the BGR's info here. A) the Resolution - 480 by 360 is sounding odd to me. The 9000 in my hands right now is definitely 480 by 320, so it seems strange that would change on these devices. B) The 3.2 megapixel camera. Will be sweet if that's the case, but again, it at least seems the 9000 I am using right now is at 2MP. Who knows though - maybe the hardware has the capabilities to bump up to 3.2 but the software just isn't supporting it yet. With different processors being rumored I guess anything is game. Cool Info though! ]

Only 114,000 BlackBerry Subscribers in India

RIM is very restrictive in matters of specific numbers of BlackBerry users. Even as a BlackBerry Alliance member you cannot get information about their customer base in a country. India’s government now stated that there are just 114,000 BlackBerry subscribers.

The government claimed that the country has just about 114,000 Blackberry subscribers in the country. This was stated by the Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication

Laptop Magazine Asks - Trackball OR Scroll Wheel?

Joanna Stern & Jeff Wilson of Laptop Magazine got together for a Political BlackBerry debate. One argues for the trackball and one for the scroll wheel of old. They both bring up great points on each side but it is safe to assume that the scroll wheel is dead and buried. I guess there are still some die hard scroll wheel users out there.

It reminds me of this guy I ran into on the train once who still had a RIM 950/970. I guess habit dies hard.

Just remember the track wheel is the origin of BlackBerry thumb. Personally I vote for the Trackball. It makes browsing websites that much easier. Not to mention the fact that you don’t have to hit alt-scroll to scroll down in the application ribbon.

T-Mobile Moving On Up With 3G In NYC

Well T-Mobile is finally getting with the program. They have just announced 3G UMTS/HSDPA support in New York with a continued rollout in major markets throughout the year.

The only thing that concerns me is the fact that every carrier is trying to run 3G on a different frequency. This means that roaming with 3G is going to be a serious pain in the @$$. I have not had a chance to look into it fully but T-mobile seems to be rolling out on the 1700Mhz AWS spectrum which is totally different than the ones used by AT&T and even Europe.

The best part about T-Mobile used to be that you could import cool handsets that work on their GSM network. From now on this means that you won’t ever get 3G on those handsets if they don’t specifically support T-Mobile’s 3g band.

There was a little bit of confusion with the 3G-less BlackBerry 9000 we posted. We heard two different codenames: Javelin and Niagara. Well, we were just told some more information on both devices. It seems the BlackBerry codenamed Niagara is actually an EV-DO device slated to hit Verizon in May of 2009. That seems a long way away but here are the specs on that model:

ASK US - What Ever Happened To The List Style Themes?

One of our readers Jeff just asked me a question that I was never asked before. The problem is that I don’t really know. So I am appealing to all of you for some help.

Jeff used to have a 8703 which had a standard theme called BB-InsightList that he really liked. Now he upgraded to an 8830 and no more List themes are available.

Does anybody know if there is one out there for the 8830? Or if they have found something similar? Let us know.

Hands on review of the BlackBerry 9000

It seems like we’ve been talking about the BlackBerry 9000 forever. It’s starting to get to the point of iPhone hype, which I suppose isn’t a bad thing for RIM and all of us BlackBerry Geeks out there. Still, we’re left wanting. We’ve gotten no real hands on taste of the 9000 — well, we did have one, which claimed that it has a front-facing camera, which turned out to be bunk. Well, Kevin at CrackBerry got his grubby paws on one, courtesy of a quickly-pulled eBay auction. He plans to do a multi-part review, and the first one is just massive. So I’ll go over the highlights, including some pictures.

So it looks pretty much like the pictures that have been circulating for the past few months. It’s a sleeker-looking version of the 8800 series, which should keep everyone relatively happy. Kevin reported no qualms with holding the device. Here’s some better news for those of you worried about the keyboard: He says that, as a fan of the Curve and not of the 8800 series, he found it easy to use. So that should allay some fears.

He also reports sheer excellence from OS4.6. He’s saving this for part two of his review. I’m anxious to hear about it, since it might finally provide us with a real browser. My days of complaining might be coming to a close.

The display is reportedly stellar, so much so that: “For the 88xx, Curve and Pearl users reading this who shunned the notion of upgrading to the 9000 when it comes out, let me just say this display alone will make you want to reconsider.” Unfortunately, I’m stick with my 8830 for the foreseeable future.

Pretty exciting stuff. There will sure to be plenty more, so tune in for the highlights.

WES Exhibitor Spotlight: Trackaphone

Trackaphone offers location based services for business that need to track their employees or their assets while they’re in the field. The Asset Locator and The People Locator work similarly, giving businesses the ability to keep an eye on phones, employees, GPS devices, lone worker protection devices, and more. Both work with Mobile Finder, a stripped down version of the software that lets you keep an eye on the field even while you’re on the move. So far it’s only available on the 8800, so hopefully we’ll see support for more models at WES.

Zumobi is just around the corner

In their latest newsletter, Zumobi announced that they’re putting the “finishing touches” on the BlackBerry version of their software. If you head over to their home page you can sign up to be informed the minute it’s released. They’ve also made a couple of additions to their Tiles gallery, from notables CMT and Comedy Central. The CMT Tile delivers up-to-date news in the country music world, while Comedy Central offers up a new Joke of the Day Tile.

BlackBerry 8330 starts hitting shelves

Three major carriers have released the BlackBerry Curve 8330 or are gearing up to do so shortly, in addition to those that have had them out for a while. As promised, Alltell is now offering the badboy in their online store for $299 after online discount and mail-in rebate. Sprint ads for it are appearing in American newspapers, offering a red or titanium Curve with a price of $179 after rebate, and with a two contract. Finally, Verizon’s will be available online and over the phone on May 9th, and over other channels on the 12th. It’s reported to be going for $270 after a $50 rebate and a 2 year contract.

BlackBerry 9000 Review - eBay Purchased Device Emerges!!

Remember those three BlackBerry 9000 units that showed up on eBay? As I made note in an earlier post, when the auction got pulled by the powers that be (err.. RIM?!!) there were still two units remaining, leaving one Crazy BlackBerry Addict anxiously waiting for the delivery of this next generation BlackBerry smartphone.

As luck would have it, it turns out I’m the Crazy BlackBerry Addict! When mention of the eBay 9000s came up in the forums, there was plenty of discussion as to whether the devices were legit or not. The images accompanying the auction seemed too good to be photoshopped and were unlike any other leaked 9000 pictures I had encountered previously, so it only took a few minutes to make the decision to click the Buy it Now button and PayPal over the funds. At £399.99GBP + £19.99GBP shipping (~ $828USD) it was a gamble, but potentially a good deal considering previously reported rumors that the 9000 could carry an MSRP in the $900-$1,000 range. Worst case scenario if things went south I’d eat KD for a month and have a good story to tell.

As for these particular BlackBerry 9000s, the image above says it all. 100% the real deal. It was delivered to my house yesterday afternoon and I’ve been playing with my eBay-purchased toy ever since. You’ll want to keep it locked to CrackBerry.com. I was planning on writing up one super review, but there's simply WAY too much info to put into one post. Part I (this post) will cover the unboxing and initial impressions/comparisons and after getting a few more hours facetime with the device Part II will get into the device features and OS4.6. I'll follow that up with an in-depth video walk through and we are also going to record a Special Edition BlackBerry 9000 podcast.
