Well, I did report that the iPhone SDK has been downloaded more than 100,000 times so it’s only fair to put that in to context. I picked up this little tidbit of information from what I thought was a very cynical article run by The Register. Personally I hate The Register and have found with many previous articles that the authors tend to twist minor details to suit whatever fairy land concept they dreamed up. So, before actually doing any research in to articles they write, I imagine they’ve already nailed down what their perspective will be and then go and hunt for information that would give credence to it. A lot of Register articles I’ve noticed also try to create these clear “Good Guy/Bad Guy” characters with no shades of gray. For example, despite the very open and friendly comments from Rich Miner at Google, this article certainly tries its best to cast him in a negative light. They do the same thing with any article related to Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia (which is, apparently, their pet hate).
Anyway, back on topic: 750,000 downloads. Huge. Meanwhile, RIM continues to skip along on its way, nary a concern about the impending destruction of their developer community. Where they could be launching developer competitions, a new forum, and talking about what they are doing to improve the documentation, APIs and tools available, they instead do nothing. Lacking a voice, presence, impact, and style it is perhaps time we as developers faced up to the harsh reality that RIM actually doesn’t care a whim about us (1). I can handle a negligent but well meaning parent company. I cannot much tolerate one that is both negligent and would seek to abrogate its responsibilities.
750,000 downloads. That’s a lot of developers. I imagine at least some of them looked at the BlackBerry SDK and maybe even thought about developing some free applications — you know, those things that end-users like that add “stickyness” for RIM. Hey did you see Android running Quake?!! Whooosh, they’re gone. Don’t blame ‘em.
Oh and if you’re in to podcasts and want to hear what a real Aussie sounds like (Hint: It’s not necessarily like Steve Irwin and I don’t do “Crikey!”) then tune in to the next BlackBerryCool Podcast where I’ll be talking to Simon. Should be up in a day or so (Episode 20).
(1) I should note I have had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with some individuals at RIM who do care. However, it appears to me from the outside that both their voices are silenced and their purse strings tightened, leaving them ineffective to bring about real change.
