SplashID, developed by Splash Data is an application for your BlackBerry which allows you to securely store your sensitive logins, passwords etc. so that you are never caught without them.
The SplashID application is made up of 2 components, the handheld software and a desktop component. You have the option of entering your data into either of these components. Once you perform a sync, your data will be identical on both platforms.
SplashID for BlackBerry carries a price tag of $29.95 but is available as a trial download.
Downloading and Installing the SplashID Desktop and Handheld Software
SplashID for BlackBerry 4.07 includes both a desktop and a handheld component. Both SplashID components can be downloaded here.
To install the desktop portion of the set up you will need to download the above mentioned files and then double click the installer on your desktop (or wherever you have saved it to). Follow all of the instructions provided by the installation wizard and you are all set. The next step is to install the handheld component.
In order to install the handheld portion of the SplashID application you will need to run the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and select “Application Manager”. When prompted, locate the SplashID.alx file. This file should be in the following location: c:\Program Files\SplashData\SplashID BlackBerry\SplashID.alx.
Make sure that SplashID is checked off on the presented list and then click the “Next” button. The installer will go ahead and load the application onto your BlackBerry.
Once the process has completed, you will see the SplashID icon located in your accessories menu.
NOTE: You do have the option of installing the SplashID handheld component OTA. To do so, simply load the following link into your BlackBerry mobile browser. SplashID OTA Download
Synchronizing Your BlackBerry and the Desktop Component
In order to synchronize your data between your BlackBerry and the SplashID desktop software you will need to perform the following steps:
- In the top section of the Intellisync window, check the box that reads “Execute Add-in actions.”
- In the bottom section, click the button named “Configure Add-ins.”
- Check the box that reads “SplashID Intellisync Add-ins” and choose OK.
- Click the Synchronize now button to complete the sync.
Getting Started
When you first launch SplashId on your BlackBerry you are presented with a quick “how to” guide that breaks down the process of entering your data in 3 easy steps.
Once you have read the “how to” guide, you will be prompted to setup a password for your SplashID software. I would suggest doing this, as you do not want your entire list of passwords to fall into the wrong hands. You will also want to ensure that you write this password down and use the same one for the SplashID desktop component. Having the same password will allow for synchronization.
List View
The list view is the first bit of the interface that you will see when getting into SplashID for BlackBerry. You will notice that there are a bunch of sample entries already in place. Use these as templates for your own personal entries.
Tree View
If you click your trackwheel/trackball while in the list view you will be presented with a menu with many options. One of the options listed is “Tree View”. Selecting this option will change your view. Instead of a list of various passwords, you will now see a list of categories that can be drilled down to reveal the particular entries contained within each.
Detailed View
When you have an entry selected (highlighted) on your screen, you can click the trackball/trackwheel to bring up the menu. In the menu you will see an option which reads “Detailed View”.
Choosing detailed view will bring up a screen that shows you all of the fields (9 total) for that particular entry. You can select any of these fields and edit them however you wish. It is in this area that you will choose which type of icon is to be associated with this specific entry.
When in detailed view, scrolling the trackwheel/trackball will cycle through each field and then onto the next password entry. Pressing the escape button will bring you right back to the list view.
Adding, Deleting or Editing an Entry
Adding a new entry into the list (or deleting the template entries) is a quick process. Simply click the trackwheel/trackball and choose “Add Item” or “Delete Item”. If you choose to add an item, you will be shown a screen with all the fields blank. Populate each field and choose an icon. When you are finished, click the trackball/trackwheel once more and choose “Done”. Your new entry will now be visible in both List View and Tree View.
To delete an entry, access the menu and scroll down until “Delete Item” is highlighted. Click the trackball/trackwheel and then agree to the prompt. The selected entry will be removed from your list.
If you wish to edit a specific entry, simply access the menu and select “Edit Item”. Make sure you have the entry you wish to edit highlighted in yoru list. You will be taken to that entry and have the ability to edit any of the associated fields. When you are finished, access the menu and select “Done”. Your selected entry will now be updated.
Introduction to the SplashID Desktop Component
So far we have looked at only the handheld portion of the SplashID software. Let’s take a quick look at the desktop component and it’s functionality.
The SplashID desktop component has the capability to perform all of the tasks that the handheld component does and a couple more. The one I would like to touch on is the Web Auto Fill option.
Web Auto Fill: The desktop component of SplashID makes it possible to automate the sign in process on most websites. To do this you simply assign the type “Web Logins” to the desired entry, populate the password and username fields and ensure that the correct URL has been entered. Your usernames and passwords will be entered automatically now when you navigate to that particular web page.
My Opinion
My experience with the SplashID for BlackBerry application was great. I was able to populate all of my passwords, web logins, and other crucial data in minutes. I found that having the desktop component was a huge bonus as it made deleting the sample entries a snap. It is also much easier to enter information with a standard keyboard rather than tiny typing on the BlackBerry keyboard.
This software has so many options and preferences that you can set, I could not possibly get into all of them here. I suggest checking out the great user guide that SplashData has provided. The guide breaks down all of the options and buttons you will have access to in a very easy to understand format.
Overall, I would suggest picking up a copy of SplashID if you have a large number of passwords that you need to keep track of. Use it for both your personal and professional purposes and never be left scratching your head again thinking “I could have sworn I set that password to “Flibbertigibbet” (yes that is a real word, look it up).
