  Opera Mini Server Software Upgraded! Cool Features

  I was just one of my regular mobile blogs, wapreview.com, and came upon a post Dennis published on February 4th. It turns out that Opera made some serious upgrades to their server software on February 3^rd. I was surprised since I had not heard a word about it. I didn’t even know Opera would be doing upgrades without upgrading the client. They now even have an opera:config page to edit the server side settings. (Firefox powerusers will know what I am talking about) Makes you feel like an amateur hacker again.

  It was also nice to learn from Dennis that Opera Mini has a cool autocomplete function for URL’s. It turns out that you don’t have to type in the whole www. and .com part of a URL. If you just type berryreview it will take you to www.berryreview.com. I wish RIM would do that with the native BB browser!

  You should really read the rest of the well written summary by Dennis but I will give a teaser below:

  Here’s the changelog:

  • Added a simple UI to the server-side preferences that exists. Go to ‘opera:config’ to configure some settings.
  • Tweaked phonenumber detection, there should be somewhat fewer false positives now, but you can now also disable the feature on the opera:config page.
  • Increased the default timeouts to 40 seconds from 20.
  • Updated the HTML rendering engine to be similar to the latest Opera 9.5 weekly release.
  • Fixed support for entering hostnames starting with a number (eg, 360.yahoo.com) as a URL without the starting http://
  • Made content folds visible even when the background is black.
  • Fixed inter-page links.
  • Fixed clipping rectangle for iframes with hidden overflow css properties, this bug caused some links inside some iframes to be unclickable.
  • Fixed HTTP basic auth for pages with non-7bit authentication realm.
  • Pages with nested tags are now somewhat easier to navigate (<a href='link'>Link 1 <a href='link2'> Link 2</a></a>), it’s now possible to follow both the inner and the outer link.
  • New WML stylesheet.
  • Various optimizations resulting in the average transcoding time to be 20% lower.

  Blackberry e-mail goes down… no kidding!

  And here we go again. The Boy Genius Report reports that the Blackberry network has just had another outage.

  “This is getting a little bit ridiculous, folks. We here at BGR have trouble putting our Blackberries down. Seriously. It’s a problem. That said, we’re getting a little bit frustrated with RIM following the 3rd service interruption in 9 months, and the second in a week. It’s poor form. Following the notorious blackout last year, RIM promised that it would never happen again. Hollow promises, as around 80% of all Berry devices in the continental US have been affected by a service outage that began around 3 am this morning. No carrier has been spared, with reports of crippled devices from Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Nextel, and Sprint. It seems that some users are finally getting back up online, but there’s been no official word from RIM regarding a projected time of resolution. Forgive us, but we’re beginning to question the reliability of our beloved BlackBerries. So sad, they’ve turned into Sidekicks.”

  I suspected there was something wrong a couple of times, but since I was getting my mail, I didn’t bother to check. But then I was informed of what was going on and, yes, RIM had indeed dropped the ball again.

  I am not going to rant. This has gone beyond the point of ranting. I’m just gonna droop sadly and watch RIM take a beating from the entire media and user base. Again.

  12 GB microSD card due March 10th

  The next iteration of BlackBerry-compatible memory cards that was peeped back at CES, is due to hit shelves shortly for a cool $179.00. It’ll be coming with the same USB adapter as the 8 GB card, as well as the SD card adapter. It’s a solid step up in both capacity and pricetag, but more importantly the memory card expands the BlackBerry’s multimedia capabilities. At 12 GB, it’s not out of the question to get several full-length movies loaded up on your BlackBerry.

  Why Does RIM Not Allow You To Block 3rd Party Icons?

  I have always been annoyed with every new device I get because of a simple reason. When you first register your phone on the network you will get up to 15 different homescreen browser shortcut icons on your homescreen! These range from upselling applications to ringtones to Music ID services. AT&T has almost 15 of these the second you register on the network!

  The annoying part is that there is no good way to uninstall them. You can remove their service books but they will return every time you resend your service books. You can alternatively hide each one but why does RIM force us to go through this hassle? Imagine if Microsoft did this?

  I did find a RIM knowledgebase article that details how to block these icons if you are on a BES. Pretty cool but I am not sure of the ramifications this would cause for other homescreen icons.

  BlackBerry device users may see new third-party icons appear on the Home screen when performing the following actions:

  • registering the BlackBerry device with the wireless network
  • switching the SIM card on the BlackBerry device
  • upgrading the software on the BlackBerry device

  These icons vary depending on the service provider. The icons are bookmarks that utilize the BlackBerry Internet Browsing Service to provide direct access to web sites on the Internet. Some of these web sites enable you to install third-party software or content, or install push services that cause the icons or URL links to change periodically when the data source changes.

  BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrators can block the appearance of these icons by setting theAllowOtherBrowsers IT policy toFalse. This action prevents third-party bookmark icons from being installed on the BlackBerry device.

  If you are not using a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you can manually hide any icon on the BlackBerry device by holding theALT key, clicking the icon, and selectingHide Application.

  FAQ: How To Dial Phone Numbers With Letters

  I know many people already know this shortcut but after reading a RIM Knowledgebase article about it I thought I would share it again.

  Many companies such as Fed-Ex advertise their numbers like 1–800–GO-FEDEX. The problem is that BlackBerrys do not have the traditional 3 letters per key of other cellphones.

  This problem is simply solved by holding the ALT key down while typing in the letters in the phone application.

  Simple as that. You can even add phone numbers to your address book this way.

  I simply cannot believe that Research in Motion is having another outage. It looks like all carriers have been experiencing BIS issues since about 3:00 a.m. this morning. These outages have moved beyond just annoying into the realm of incompetence.

  Your competitors have been looking for ways to knock you off your throne atop the Smartphone market for years and you are hand delivering them fodder to do so because it seems as though you have no one who knows how to run a data center on the payroll.

  BlackBerry users love BlackBerrys because you build some of the most stable devices the market has seen. Don’t tarnish your image because you can’t figure out how to keep your service up and running on the back end.

  WES 2008 Early Bird Registration Expires February 29th!

  I just received an email letting me know that early bird registration for WES is quickly coming to an end. If you're not up to speed on WES, it stands for Wireless Enterprise Symposium and is Research in Motion's BIG annual show. WES 2008 will run from May 13th to 15th and is held in Orlando, Florida. From their site:

  When I attended WES last year, CrackBerry.com was still in its infancy, so I mainly used WES as an opportunity to meet a ton of people in the BlackBerry world (and there wasn't too much exciting in the way of news to actually report on)! But upon returning home I did manage to handout several BEST OF WES 2007 Crackie Awards, and will do the same this year (and have a bunch of other stuff planned too!).

  I think this year will be loaded with big BlackBerry news, so the Crack Team will be back in full force (I booked my room a month ago!) to cover the event, liven up the show and avoid hotel security :-)

  BIS customers report outage

  There are reports of a partial service blackout for BlackBerry Internet Service customers started earlier this morning in the Americas. Folks are experiencing lags in e-mail reception as of about 2:30 AM this morning. Not everyone’s effected, and some have even reported that their service has been restored, but there’s definitely been enough problems to take notice. Wow, this is a new record for outages - AT&T’s problems three weeks back, the North America-wide issue earlier last week and now this. Yeesh. My BIS mail is working fine, took about 3 minutes for a message to get through, but how’s your service doing? Thanks Chris!

  Survey says: BlackBerry users crave entertainment

  The talk around BlackBerry and smartphone circles lately has been the shift from a business-centric device to a consumer device. While BlackBerry’s success was once on the business side, they’re seeing more and more consumers adopt their phones, and other smartphones. Why? Because they’re all-in-one devices that provide superior entertainment capabilities. In fact, 90 percent of the over 3,000 respondents to this survey said that they wouldn’t switch back to a traditional handset after using a smartphone for a period of time.
  

  “This survey speaks volumes about the powerful riptide smartphone and BlackBerry devices are creating in the mobile entertainment market,” said Nicholas Reichenbach, executive vice president of publishing for Magmic Games. “The results suggest that positive entertainment experiences on devices are a critical factor in product adoption and loyalty. As a result, it is important for mobile carriers, OEMs and entertainment publishers to continue efforts to offer compelling entertainment products to mobile customers.”

  The findings of the survey are as follows, of which 83 percent were in the age 22 to 49 demographic:

  • 90 percent of the gamers said that gaming on a smartphone was superior to gaming on a traditional handset. Fairly obvious. People tended to like the bigger screen and easier controls in terms of their gaming.
  • Here’s a good one: 51 percent of respondents, and 60 percent of female respondents, said that they play games on their BlackBerry more than they do on any other console. Obviously, these respondents have never played Rock Band.
  • 65 percent of BlackBerry owners purchase an entertainment product or service at least every three months.
  • Puzzle games like Tetris and Sudoku were the most popular. I can’t say I’m surprised. Tetris is the greatest game ever invented.
  • 41 percent said they play games during the workday. This makes sense, since 79 percent said that they felt more relaxed after playing a game.

  So as we see more and more people taking advantage of BlackBerry features other than voice and email, we’re going to see more and more consumers pick up the devices. This is certainly why RIM is preparing a new round of consumer-friendly models, including the Curve.

  WOW...Now this is getting ridiculous. Many BlackBerry users on the BIS (myself included) are reporting difficulties in receiving emails this morning. It seems so far that only email has been affected, but the problem does span across multiple carriers. The first report of problems came in during the night (3am). Will bring more news as it comes in, but in the meantime you can stay on top of the discussion in the CrackBerry Forums.

  "I just spoke to my AT&T Biz Care Rep. He said that there was an issue with Provisioning on RIM's Behalf, but the problem was corrected. Emails should slowly start to arrive as BIS now has a ton of emails in que for delivery."

  Last week we heard tidbits of a deal between Alcatel-Lucent and Research in Motion that would bring pre-paid BlackBerry plans to emerging markets around the world. I wonder, however, if pre-paid BlackBerry plans here in the U.S. would be a hit?

  Is there a big enough market for would be, pre-paid, BlackBerry users that it would warrant RIM, the wireless carriers, and even a few of the MVNOs like Virgin Mobile, Revel, Helio, etc., coming out with pre-paid BlackBerry plans?

  T-Mobile has done pretty well with the SideKick. Would a pre-paid BlackBerry have similar success.

  S4BB Releases TimeTracker & BatteryBooster

  S4BB has been on a software release spree in the last month or two. Their latest releases are two small and simple applications for BlackBerry.

  The first is called TimeTracker which goes for $9.99. This is a very very simplistic time tracking application for those who need to keep track of billable hours. Sadly there is no way to export the information. They should at least add that feature.

  The second is a very dubious BatteryBooster application which goes for $4.99. Personally I always put these sorts of applications in the same category as stick on antenna boosters. I will reserve judgment until I have a chance to try it out myself. Anybody know what the 105–108% guarantee on the box means?

  Bayalink Liberty Key - Use Your BlackBerry From Your Computer

  Hayden has scored once again by getting details on one of the nichiest (is that a word?) accessory for BlackBerry devices. It is called the Bayalink Liberty and it has a very specific function. It allows you to use certain BlackBerry functions from your laptop such as sending email, browsing the internet, or open attachments through the BlackBerryn over Bluetooth. You can read the details below or head on over to Bayalink’s website for more.

  The Liberty Key is available now for $99.99 on Bayalinks website. The only caveat is that it mentions that there is only a 1–year subscription? I am not sure what you are subscribing to but I would recommend looking into that before buying. Also keep in mind that there is a snowballs chance in hell that your BES admin will help you setup such a service unless you are on really good terms.

  Bayalink Liberty has been designed from inception to be fully integrated to the Blackberry platform with convenience and security as primary foundations.

  Once configured, simply plug in the Liberty Key and launch the handheld software. The software communicates between your handheld and the Liberty key via Bluetooth technology giving you the features of your BlackBerry on a regular screen and keyboard.

  

  Convenience:

  • Send a message using Liberty, it gets sent from your BlackBerry
  • Delete a message using Liberty, it gets deleted on your BlackBerry
  • Mark a message read using Liberty, it gets marked read on your BlackBerry

  EVEEK
  The Eveek forum has a small selection of free BlackBerry themes available to it’s members. You will have to register to gain access to the relevant posts in the forum. Look closely at each theme, as some of the themes represented here are for purchase only. I have included Eveek in my list for FREE BlackBerry themes because some of the themes available for free download are of amazing quality. Take a couple seconds to sign up and see if there is anything there for you.

  BlackBerry Freaks
  Check out BlackBerry themes available for free from the BlackBerry Freaks website. As with most of the other resources presented here, the themes are all broken down by BlackBerry model. Overall, a great selection of free themes here (nearly 100 available). Watch out though if you are surfing for free themes while at work, there are a couple NSFW themes presented here.

  FreeBBThemes
  Free BlackBerry Themes is another great resource for your theme needs. With 50 or so themes divided into categories such as: College, Nature, Food, Cartoon, etc. there are a lot of topics covered here. It is clear that a lot of work went into creating gorgeous themes which are completely free for you to download.

  Here is a great iPhone styled theme that is available for FREE. Most iPhone themes for the BlackBerry will run you a few bucks. If you absolutely have to have that slick iPhone look and feel, try the bPhone theme from RogersMJ.

  Stypod
  Stypod.com has links to 8 beautifully designed themes for your BlackBerry. The bPhone theme mentioned above is one of the 8 themes available here, along with 7 other well thought out designs.

  ZOLVED
  The Zolved community is another location where you can find a few free themes for your BlackBerry. There are themes available for 7100 models (10 themes), 7250 models (15 themes) and 8700 models (10 themes) of BlackBerry.

  While there are no screenshots available on the Zolved site, the themes are free, so try them out. If you recommend these themes to other BlackBerry owners, please leave a note in the comments.

  BerryReview
  Our friends over at BerryReview.com have been cultivating a great list of both free and commercial themes for all models of BlackBerry. While there is no way to sort out the free entries from the commercial ones, a quick scan of the page proves them quite easy to identify.

  Take a look and I am sure you will be impressed. You will also find some great articles about building your own themes. Most of the themes available from BerryReview are designed for the BlackBerry 8XXX models.

  BlackBerryThemes.co.uk
  This is one of the gems found on the BerryReview list of free themes mentioned above. That being said, I think the BlackBerryThemes.co.uk website deserves a mention all of it’s own.

  BlackBerryThemes has well over 100 FREE themes available for 8100, 8300 and 8800 models of the BlackBerry. These are great themes folks, with screenshots provided for each. If you find yourself going back to the site over and over again for a new, fresh, free BlackBerry theme, please consider making a donation to reward the obvious work that has gone into providing these great BlackBerry themes.

  Cherrichiodo
  Here is another great resource for free BlackBerry themes. Cherrichiodo has split their offerings into four seperate categories, with a combined total of more than 200 available themes. The four categories include 81XX models (137 themes), Curve(83XX) models (38 themes), 87XX models (11 themes) and 88XX models (15 themes).

  Every theme listed on Cherrichiodo is accompanied by multiple screenshots. Search away and I am sure you will find something you like here.

  Jason Calhoun
  Jason Calhoun has a small offering of 6 themes built specifically for your BlackBerry. While there are only 6 free themes available, they do look great. Standouts include the 3 AT&T branded themes, they are absolutely gorgeous.

  Mobile41
  WOW! Mobile41 has over 1300 Blackberry themes that you can download absolutely free of charge. While a donation is required for any themes downloaded OTA, the entire list is available for free download to your desktop. One could spend a great deal of time looking at all of the great themes linked to here. . .I suggest you get started.

  There you have it folks, a huge amount of free BlackBerry themes just waiting for you to download and install. While I am positive that this list is not “comprehensive”, I am confident that the major players are represented here.

  Service streams video from your phone

  A friend just linked me to Qik recently, which lets you upload video from your Nokia handset right to their service wirelessly, or even stream a live video feed from your phone. Let’s face it, that’s pretty awesome, and since the BlackBerry 8130 introduced video recording support, RIM’s left a lot to follow-through on. BlackBerry Unite! is starting to get on the multimedia sharing train, but stuff like Qik just goes to show how much Nokia’s ahead on the video front. Of course, there are corporate security and bandwidth issues which hold stronger video support back on BlackBerry, but who knows what OS 4.5 has in store? One way or the other, Qik is a glimpse into the possible future of video on BlackBerry.

  Kodak makes cameras even smaller

  Engadget Mobile reported on some new camera tech from Kodak. Dubbed the KAC-05020, the tiny new 5 megapixel camera has pixels just 1.4 microns in diameter, down from the 1.75 microns seen in most cameras. In this case, the “pixel” (sometimes called a sensel) refers to the image sensors in the camera, rather than the points of color that make up an image. It also uses TRUESENSE technology, which has two to four times the light sensitivity of most cameras. The technology will be released to manufacturers in the second quarter of this year, so maybe we can hope to see some more impressive cameras in the BlackBerry around then.

  Design a skin at Unique Skins

  If DecalGirl doesn’t have exactly the skin you want for your BlackBerry, you might be interested in checking out Unique Skins. Rather than selling pre-made skins, they offer a utility that lets you design your own. The hideous example at left is there to show off some of the included patterns, but you can upload pictures of your own as well as add text of various sizes and colors. Support for everything the 7100T to the 8100 Pearl is available, and each design costs $15 including front and back. DecalGirl’s prices are about half that, and rumor has it they’ll be supporting a similar custom skin service soon… Unique Skins appears to be fairly new, so anyone with comments on quality is welcome to step forward.

  Free Pub Checkers Game In Owners Lounge

  First of all I think it is stupid of RIM to still not allow you to access the Owners Lounge from your BlackBerry. With that said Hayden got the skinny on another free Magmic game, Pub Checkers, in the BlackBerry Owners Lounge. This is just the plain old Checkers game you grew up with.

  Once again you need to be a registered member of the owners lounge to get at the game and the install is Desktop Manager only. The game is available for the all the 7XXX & 8XXX series devices which covers all of the color BlackBerrys out there.

  It seems to be a new trend that older Magmic games are showing up free in the Owners lounge and BlackBerry mobile website. Hopefully there are more to come.
