  BlackBerry BIS outage again?

  What’s that sound? Right, it’s hundreds of thousands of BlackBerry users left without immediate access to their Gmail, Yahoo!, and other BIS accounts. The current outage, which has been confirmed by RIM, is affecting all BIS users, regardless of carrier. It is not affect blackberry.net addresses. There is no estimated time of the fix, and no specifics have been been given. Other services possibly effected are web browsing and any 3rd party applications that require access to the handheld’s data connection. Forgive us for this one, but RIM: COME ON! This is the third major outage in 5 months, an outage Berry users are becoming all too accustomed to. We’ll save the rant for another day, but BlackBerry has long been heralded as a bastion of reliability and stable service. At the very least we would appreciate some sort of statement from RIM.Start venting……now.

The case is very well designed and the only fault I could find with it was its bulk. I admit that the bulky size will discourage some potential users but the protection it provides your BlackBerry is state of the art.   FAQ: Change BlackBerry Desktop Manager Settings From BES to BIS

  Now this is a problem I have been faced with a few times. It is not that simple to change an email address from a BES account to a BIS account especially in regards to the desktop manager installation. RIM has just posted a great tutorial in the Knowledgebase on exactly how to switch between the two. It involves deleting some service books and modifying your installation of BlackBerry Desktop Manager so this may not be for everybody.

  David Boyd of CrackBerry.com has done a wonderful in depth review of the new T-Mobile BlackBerry 8320. The review gives you all of the down and dirty details on the new device. My favorite is his find that the new BlackBerry 8320 does away with the OZ IM clients and brings the native ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, & Google Talk clients to the table. It is interesting that his attempt to restore the device from a previous backup cause UMA to not work over WiFi. I highly recommend going to check out David’s full review at this link he does a great job of covering all the high points.

  Google has created and released an application pack for BlackBerry devices. This application pack includes 4 Google applications in one. It includes: Google Search, Google News, Gmail, and Google Maps in one install file with 4 different application icons on your home screen. It is easy to switch each application on and off by just selecting the checkbox by each choice when you install. Keep in mind the download is quite hefty at 350K so if you are on a limited data plan…

  The Google Maps and Google Search applications are really just shortcuts that take you to the respective mobile homepages. The Gmail and Google Maps are the same applications that we are all familiar with but have new icons. You can get this new application pack by going to www.google.com/m on your BlackBerry and clicking on the new link that says “Gmail, Maps & more” on that page. You then select the programs you wish to install and click next to download the install files. You will then see the new icons on your homescreen. Another nice free service from Google!

  Daylite 3.5 lets Mac users get their BB sync on

  Marketcircle recently announced an update to their Daylite productivity tool. A quick look over to their blog reveals the big changes, namely turning a single-device sync application into a calendar and contact sharing service for up to 50 users. They’ve included a Trash bin to give you a little extra wriggle room when it comes to accidental deletes, and around 300 help articles to help you work your way around the software. If BlackBerry isn’t your thing and you’re all about the Apple, Daylite works with the iPhone and iPod, in addition to Windows Mobile and Palm devices. If your Mac-ified office could use something like this, check out Marketcircle’s site.

  Research In Motion Gains Prestigeous Security Accreditation

  BlackBerry Enterprise Solution is the First Mobile Platform to Achieve Common Criteria Certification

  Research in Motion today announced that it has been awarded the Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 2, EAL 2+ for short, validation for BlackBerry Enterprise Server and and BlackBerry device software.

  Business 2.0 Covers The Best Designed Bluetooth Gear

  Jon Fortt at Business 2.0 posted an interesting article on the best designed Bluetooth gear to date. About half of the gear is not relevant to us BlackBerry fans but I did find his mention of?? 5 different Bluetooth headsets to be of interest. Keep in mind his picks are based on design and style and not on functionality and practical use. He gives the minimalist Apple Bluetooth headset and Aliph Jawbone headset high marks for style and includes two other A2DP headsets from Jabra and Platronics.   xPlayer - Free BlackBerry Media Player - Now Skinable

  xPlayer is one of my favorite new applications for the BlackBerry. The media player reminds me of Winamp and just gets the job done with a very user friendly interface that now also has theme options. As I mentioned before it also helps that the software is completely free when compared to the competition and has no limits and restrictions. Thankfully in the new version x-Berrysoft has provided both OTA and Desktop install links:

  3 Reasons T-Mobile Needs To Cut The Price Of The BlackBerry Pearl

  I was just thinking about all the pretty colors that T-Mobile BlackBerry Pearl now comes and how it will be a big hit it will be with all the kids whose parents refused to spend $500 or $600 on a cell phone. Then I thought about how brilliant a move Steve Jobs made when he slashed the price of the iPhone by $200.

  Here are 3 reasons T-Mobile needs to cut the price of the BlackBerry Pearl:

  1. The iPhone only costs $100 more than the BlackBerry Pearl before rebates.

   

  2. Before rebates, the iPhone is only $100 more than the BlackBerry Pearl.

   

  3. There is only a $100 price difference between the iPhone and the BlackBerry Pearl before the $50 mail-in rebate. Who ever sends those things in anyway?

  I was going to make this a top ten list, however, I think that you get my point.

  Christmas is exactly 3 months away. Just think of all the extra chores you could get your kids to do if you even hint that you might get them an iPhone as a present. That is well worth the $100.

  My 12 year old has agreed to finish the basement and build a room addition on the back of the house if I just contemplate getting her an iPhone for Christmas.

  You guys know that I love BlackBerrys. RIMarkable has been running for almost 3 years. I have to be honest though. The BlackBerry doesn’t have close to that type of leverage.

  RIM announced yesterday that Celtel Uganda with the help of Emitac Mobile Solutions is now offering BlackBerry Enterprise Service and the BlackBerry 8800 to corporate customers. Celtel’s also supporting East Africa’s One network, so visitors from the neighbourhood can get their roaming groove on.

  “We continue to extend the global availability of the BlackBerry solution and are pleased to be launching today in Uganda with Celtel and EMS.   AT&T Data Network Issues. Yet Another BlackBerry Outage?

  Are you on AT&T? Are you receiving your emails this morning?

  8am CST: Reports began coming in early this morning on the CrackBerry & BlackBerry Forums of AT&T users experiencing issues connecting to the AT&T GPRS and EDGE network. AT&T has confirmed they are having problems with their data and data routing and that BlackBerry users may be unable to send or receive messages. Not everyone is experiencing difficulties - I have spoke to a few AT&T BlackBerry-using colleagues and their Berrys are operating just fine. Hopefully you fall into this category and are not affected - but best to be aware of the situation just in case.

  BlackBerry 8320 has video recording?

  I don’t know if we can chalk this up to faulty copy writing, but word has it that T-Mobile’s BlackBerry 8320 has video clip recording available. Video recording is something a lot of folks are looking for, it’s surprising that it’s a feature that slipped under the radar. Since the 8320 just came out yesterday, maybe some of you fine readers out there who picked one up can confirm or deny these rumors.

  UPDATE: The overwhelming majority has spoken, and confirmed that the 8320 doesn’t have any video capture capabilities at present. Either T-Mobile’s let the cat out of the bag on an upcoming feature, or it’s just a full-blown marketing screwup.

  RIM gets EAL security accreditation

  RIM announced today from Rome that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and handheld software have received Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 2 augmented at the 8th International Common Criteria Conference. “Common Criteria,” whatnow? Common Criteria is a security evaluation standard, meaning BlackBerrys aren’t necessarily meeting specific security features, but are rather categorizing all of their characteristics so that they can be evaluated within the same framework as other technologies. This makes testing a lot easier, since everything within the Common Criteria is covering the same bases. CC blankets a range of IT equipment across 25 countries, but BlackBerrys are the first mobiles to get on the list. Go RIM! Gold star time.

  Use Your BlackBerry As A Boarding Pass

  When flying Air Canada within Canada or internationally on a flight departing from Canada, passengers that use their BlackBerrys as a paperless boarding pass when checking in. You could actually use any (supported) mobile device, however, BlackBerry Boarding Pass sounds much better than HTC Vox Boarding Pass or Motorola Q boarding pass.

  Lise Fournel, the airline’s Senior Vice-President of E-Commerce and Chief Information Officer, commented: “Introduction of the mobile boarding pass is a key element in Air Canada’s initiatives to use the most recent and secure mobile and 2-D barcode technologies to simplify our customers’ travel experience.

  In addition to the simplification of travel and business processes made possible by the replacement of paper with electronic documents, we’re particularly excited about the expanded application of 2-D barcode technology that gives our employees better tools to serve our customers more efficiently.”
