FAQ: Install JAR / JAD Files From Your SD Card Or Internal Memory

I just discovered and tried something new on my BlackBerry and I thought I would share it with you all. If you transfer a JAR (JAVA) file to the media card or memory of your device using either mass storage mode or desktop manager you will be able to install the file from your BlackBerry. This is very useful for people who do not have data plans or have a MAC and want to install JAR and Java games. It is now very easy to try out the many free games at GetJar.com by just copying them to your memory card. Just follow the instructions below once you have moved the JAR file to your BlackBerry. I have tried this with COD files without much success but maybe… Keep in mind that you only need the JAR files. The JAD files are of no use to you.

Open the media manager and click the menu button:

Then select explore and find the JAR file on your BlackBerry

You then click on the JAR file and you will be shown the installation prompt just like you would if you installed the application OTA

AT&T’s got a busy month ahead of them

We know the RAZR 2 launched today, but what’s more comforting than knowing that the Motorola Q9, UTStarcom 5700, BlackBerry 8820, and Pantech C810 (it says C180 in the price sheet, though) should be launching this month! Well, theorectically next month. What gadget lover wouldn’t be super stoked? It seems as if the Pantech C810 could indeed make it way to stores in late September, but this price sheet is only valid through September 15, so they better get to crankin’ these out!! Pricing should be as follows:

UTStarcom 5700: $269 with no contract, and only $69 with 2 year agreement!

Motorola Q9: $549 with no contract, $299 with 2 year agreement

Pantech C810: $499 with no contract, $299 with 2 year agreement

$299 seems to be the magic number with AT&T, and you can expect the BlackBerry 8820 to launch with that 2 year pricing as well. Whether you’ll be able to GPS ’till your hearts content, well, that’s a whole ‘nother story.

UPDATE: Sorry, we forgot to add this in…We’ve been told the HTC TyTN II, or AT&T 8925 should be launching October 1st on AT&T. Hopefully that will stick.

Solution For Yahoo Mail Not Being Recieved On Your BlackBerry

With all the reports of Yahoo mail having an outage on Sprint it seems to actually be a more widespread problem with other carriers experiencing problems. My Yahoo account on Cingular/AT&T was also problematic due to this outage.

RIM has posted a KnowledgeBase article that claims if you remove and reintegrate the Yahoo account to your BlackBerry things should return to normal. They claim that a recent security change implemented by Yahoo! Mail has caused this service interruption for some BlackBerry Internet Service subscribers. Microsoft eyeing RIM for acquisition?

Few days ago, Reuters ran a story speculating that Redmond-based empire may be interested to acquire Research In Motion (RIM). While this appears to be pure analyst speculation, it’s important to note that shares of the BlackBerry maker did experience a 3% increase, following the release of the news story.

Apparently, Microsoft may want to do this so it could match Google, who may release its own phone — or at least the mobile OS. On the other hand, acquisition of the handset maker could translate as knife in the backs of Microsoft’s partners who make their living by selling Windows Mobile-powered smartphones. The compromise solution seems to acquire RIM and get rid of their handset business — i.e. buy a market share. Or simple invest more in product development and marketing, and soon you won’t even think about RIM.

Friday is a good “ranting day,” isn’t it?

Rumors Of Microsoft Buying RIM Always Floating Around

When it comes to stocks prices and buyouts I usually let my stockbroker deal with them. On the other hand when it comes to rumors of my BlackBerry being bought out by the devil Microsoft I actually try to read up on it. Rumors are once again flying around that Microsoft is looking to purchase RIM to better compete with a new Google phone. I know that Microsoft has its tail between its legs when it comes to competing with Google I still don’t see what they have to gain from buying RIM. They already have their own offering, albeit a terrible one, that people still seem to buy and use. Hopefully this buyout will never happen since no good has usually come of Microsoft purchasing another company. I would love to actually see the opposite happen. What if Google bought out RIM? Now lets not start a new rumor but personally I think some more Google on RIM love would be great!

Word’s floating around about Microsoft acquiring RIM, but c’mon, we’ve heard all this talk before. Does it ever happen? No. BBCool’s set their stance on Microsoft in particular buying RIM, and especially rumors of RIM acquisitions in general. RIM’s stock showed a little blip as a result of the prospect, but it’ll pass. No doubt Microsoft is interested, but until talks are actually underway, let’s all just calm down a bit.

Weekly Contest: Should RIM follow Nokia’s lead?

Anyone who’s been listening to the other blogs knows that Nokia has had a pretty busy week, unloading a music store and a reinvigorated gaming platform, both under their new Ovi internet services umbrella. Combine that with their announcement earlier this month about discontinuing some of their chipset production, Nokia’s game is changing significantly. Some would go so far to say that they’re following Apple’s manufacturer-first lead; Nokia is no longer “providing a white label service for operators to use but … placing its own brand ahead of theirs”. We’ve had our fair share of OEM sovereignty issues lately, which is why Nokia’s progress this week is especially noteworthy. Palm has certainly provided an example of what RIM shouldn’t be doing, but Nokia leads the way, and could teach BlackBerry a thing or two. So, BBCool readers, based on Nokia’s goings-on lately, is RIM in a position to take any tips? Should they stay the course and keep doing what they’ve done best, or is there room for them to branch out? BlackBerry Connect is about the most they’ve ventured into alternative service territory, and it could be considered a little less than successful. Regardless, to remain competitive, RIM has to keep changing; will their next big step be similar to Nokia’s?

The reader who can nail down why RIM should go after consumers independent of carriers (or stick to their current carrier-centric strategy) will win three ringtones from Bplay.

Wow, great turnout last week. Either the subject struck a chord with folks, or everyone just wants a ShowMate. Regardless of who won, RIM has a lot of great feedback from you guys, and we’re sure it’s all getting heard. We dug R.T. Fitch’s post for being personal and well-written, as well as pushing for the streaming services. Matt Hess also gets props for fighting for the open source movement which is being embraced by Palm lately. With so many new products coming out, a lack of standardization is going to make life a hell of a lot harder for IT workers to deal with, and those are the people you want to be making nice with. Die Welt geht in dem Artikel “Wie Blackberry und Mails die Leistung mindern” darauf ein, dass der Mensch nicht auf multitasking ausgelegt ist und einige “Hilfsmittel” nicht mehr Leistung, sondern oft weniger Leistung bringen.

Am besten wäre es, den kleinen gelben Briefumschlag einfach zu ignorieren. Aber sobald er rechts unten auf dem Computerbildschirm auftaucht, reagieren die meisten sofort. Sie haben eine neue E-Mail bekommen. Und die könnte ja wichtig sein. Ein großer Fehler. Denn damit begibt man sich freiwillig in das Zentrum des Wahnsinns, das Internet, Telefon, Fax und Handy aus vielen Büros gemacht haben.

Dabei sollten all diese Geräte die Arbeit eigentlich nur schneller machen. Und das haben sie auch geschafft. Daran sollte man immer denken, bevor man sich Zustände wie in den 80er-Jahren zurückwünscht – als es noch eine kleine Sensation war, wenn das Faxgerät Nachrichten ausspuckte.
Aber offenbar überfordern viele gleichzeitig eintreffenden Informationen die Menschen, da sie aus ihrer eigentlichen Arbeit herausgerissen werden. In den USA hat sich mit der „Interruption-Science“ sogar ein eigener Forschungszweig entwickelt, der die Folgen von ständigen Unterbrechungen untersucht. „Problematisch wird es vor allem, wenn man gleichzeitig Entscheidungen treffen muss“, sagt Torsten Schubert vom Institut für Psychologie der Humboldt-Universität Berlin. „Beide zusammen dauern dann länger, als wenn man sie hintereinander abgearbeitet hätte.“

Dreieinhalb Jahre Lebenszeit-Verlust durch E-Mail-Müll

Wer also gerade überlegt, ob er einen Geschäftspartner am Donnerstag oder Freitag treffen will, sollte nicht parallel entscheiden, ob er einen Mitarbeiter auf Dienstreise schickt. Genau das passiert aber, wenn der Reiseantrag via E-Mail auf dem Bildschirm auftaucht, man selbst aber in Gedanken in einem ganz anderen Thema steckt. Allein mit überflüssigen E-Mails verplempern Manager dreieinhalb Jahre ihres Lebens, wollen Wissenschaftler des Henley Management College im englischen Oxfordshire herausgefunden haben. Dafür haben sie 181 Führungskräfte aus verschiedenen Branchen in Deutschland, Großbritannien, Dänemark und Schweden befragt. 60 Prozent von ihnen gaben an, dass sie jeden Tag zwei Stunden oder mehr allein mit Lesen und Beantworten von E-Mails verbringen.
In Ruhe eine Stunde nur an einem Thema zu arbeiten ist so fast ausgeschlossen. Denn Kollegen und erst recht Chefs haben sich längst daran gewöhnt, ihre Mitarbeiter jederzeit zu erreichen. Sie erwarten es sogar. Und das macht die Sache kompliziert. Wer länger als einen halben Tag nicht auf eine E-Mail antwortet, muss sich dafür meist schon rechtfertigen. Selbst ein Termin irgendwo außerhalb des Büros kann dies nur in Ausnahmefällen entschuldigen. Dafür gibt es schließlich den Blackberry.

Unlike Verizon Alltel seems to bring its 8830 World Edition with an activated internal GPS receiver. That’s a good thing as we all like those kinds of gadgets that already built-in and so they can also be activated

So MobileTracker - one of my current favorite GPS applications can be used on this phone as well. Great!

The Difficulties of Buying Software from Handmark

Now I have just had the strangest thing happened to me. I wanted to purchase Pillowfight its a game being sold by Handmark for the BlackBerry 8830, there is an inside joke there re: the game. I went to purchase it and they asked for an email address and a telephone number so they could send the links for downloading. Only problem is you have to specify your carrier and mine is not listed. If you don’t specify a carrier you are not allowed to proceed with your purchase.

So I sent an email to their sales group asking how can I go about purchasing the product and outlining the problem I was experiencing, their response to me is:

“Your request for assistance cannot be accepted because your email address is not registered with an existing account.”

So I’m prevented from purchasing their software which would get my email registered with them as being a customer of theirs and until I can achieve this they will not respond to me on how I can go about purchasing their software.

This makes sense how??

For those of you not using World Mate Live, each beta user was provided with the ability to invite 10 friends to try out World Mate Live. “Blackberry users who access their Yahoo e-mail account through their phones are having trouble making a connection with at least one wireless carrier Thursday afternoon.

Sprint Nextel confirmed that service is down for Blackberry users who want to connect to a Web-based e-mail account offered by Yahoo. There are apparently no problems with other Web-based e-mail services, such as Google Inc.’s Gmail service, according to Sprint.”

CTV news is reporting that BlackBerry designer, Research In Motion is in talks to pursue a sale to Microsoft. Microsoft is interested in taking over RIM to combat with Apple's new iPhone and Google's upcoming device. All this information is simply just a rumor at this time.

Timothy Ghriskey, chief investment officer at Solaris Asset Management LLC, said the RIM-Microsoft rumor filtered its way to his desk in Bedford Hills, N.Y.

“Yes, I have heard that. But I hear lots of rumours,” he said. “I just think it is very unlikely that Microsoft would buy this company. It would be so out of character for them to do something like this.”

Here comes BlackBerry 8820 & 8310 for AT&T

According to reports online, a tipster has confirmed that AT&T will be launching the BlackBerry 8820 and the BlackBerry Curve 8310 sometime next month. AT&T will launch the BlackBerry 8310 with full GPS and the BlackBerry 8820 with Wi-Fi and possibly GPS. No word on pricing yet but you can expect more information to pop out from AT&T real soon.

When Google releases a new service, it is always quite an event for any Internet user because chances are it will affect our overall Internet experience. The Gmail software download for BlackBerry is no exception. The shift from client-based software installed on your Windows Desktop to Web-based application is taking place very rapidly. Most of us are now relying on web based email solutions such as Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail. This shift makes a lot of sense: no need to backup your data, you can do the same tasks from any computer and everything is done from Internet Explorer or Mozilla. Unfortunately, the BlackBerry is not exactly the perfect student when it comes to migrating to Web 2.0. The limitation in screen size makes it a bit harder to navigate than on a PC.

We recently discussed how to setup Gmailso you can be instantly notified of incoming emails directly into your BlackBerry inbox. Today, we review the latest software release from Google, the Gmail application that can be installed on your BlackBerry. Whether you have a brand new BlackBerry Pearl, a shiny 8700 or a good 7100 or 7200 series, the java application will work just fine. Let’s start with the installation. Open your BlackBerry Web Browser and select “GO TO” option. Point it to http://gmail.com/app

Google web server will automatically detect the type of BlackBerry device you are using and will provide you with a link to an “over the air” download; that means no need to download to the PC first then sync-up with the USB cable!

A couple of thumb clicks later, the Gmail software is ready to use.

Similar to the web based interface, you start by typing your credentials. The software will remember them so you won’t have to re-enter them later. You’re immediately taken to the Inbox. From there, you can control all your emails and read, reply, forward, etc…

Using the overall solution is very intuitive. And surprisingly, it is fast. Google makes an excellent job at downloading the messages in the background so you don’t feel you’re stuck waiting for data download. I have not found many things I could not do with this application that I am already doing on the web based version of Gmail. You have full access to your labels, you can mark important messages, report spam, and archive. Gmail software even downloads your address book so finding the email address of your correspondent is simple. The only missing feature is the spell checker. This is too bad but understandable due to the limitation of data bandwidth on our BlackBerries.

Possible RIM takeover by Microsoft?

What would a takeover of RIM look like by software giant Microsoft? It is not the first time speculation existed over a RIM takeover.

RIM stock hit a record high today while the uncomfirmed rumours continued to swirl.

I wonder what Nokia, Motorola or HP would say if such a takeover happened.

It will be interesting to see what transpires.

The BlackBerry 8830 Lands on Alltell

It is easy to forget about Alltell when it comes to wireless carriers in the United States, however, they claim to have the America’s largest network. It must be true because I read it on RIM’s site.

Well, the largest network now carries the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition. One can pretty much bet that Alltell will come out with a new BlackBerry device right after Sprint does.

Moving Map - Another Free GPS Application For BlackBerry

Moving Map is another free GPS application that is just starting to show some support for BlackBerry devices. They claim on their website that they now support the BlackBerry 8800 (With limitations). Moving Map is actually targeted towards people in the aviation industry with this the first application they have released. The main feature of Moving Map is that it accepts two different kinds of maps on the device. The first is vector maps which can be created in Google-Earth and then exported to the Mobile Phone. The second is bitmap format which is useful for scanned maps. With both of these programs the current position is marked on the map. Last but not least Moving Map also supports GPS logging which tracks and records your locations which can later be displayed on Google-Earth.

Once again I will say this program is not as stable as Google Maps and Telenav but it does add some new features that are missing in those programs. Trying to get this application to work is not for the faint of heart and may be more of a proof in concept. If you still feel like installing it go to this link and check out the documentation.
